The Biden administration’s new restrictions on China’s semiconductor industry have triggered a tit-for-tat response from Beijing, which announced an export ban on gallium, germanium, antimony, and other critical minerals with potential military applications to the US. 

Bloomberg reports that the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced the new export controls on Tuesday morning, adding that tighter controls on graphite sales will also be seen. 

“The US has generalized the concept of national security, and politicized and weaponized economic, trade and tech issues,” a ministry spokesperson said, adding, “It has abused export control measures and unreasonably restricted certain products’ export to China.”

Several weeks of mysterious drone swarms over the skies of one New Jersey county near the military research and manufacturing facility Picatinny Arsenal have sparked concerns among residents and prompted an FBI investigation.  

“It’s kind of unsettling,” Mike Walsh, a Morris County resident who has spotted the drones on numerous occasions, told local media outlet PIX11 News.

For two weeks, residents across Morris County have reported seeing mysterious drones in the night sky.

“It’s kind of unsettling,” said Mike Walsh, a Randolph resident who has seen the drones numerous times. “Some are very big, probably the size of a car.”

Walsh said he has seen hundreds of drones since November 18th.

 

“They’re kind of go slow,” said Walsh. “They come towards you. Then they change direction a little. They’re all going different ways.”

The drones have been spotted all over Morris County. Morristown Police sent a NIXLE alert to residents on Sunday, saying they are aware of drone activity and requesting if a drone crashes or lands, do not approach or handle it.

Resembling a high-tech capsule, it can wash and dry users in just 15 minutes. Chairman Yasuaki Aoyama revealed at an Osaka lecture that the device is 70% complete, aiming for a revolutionary bathing experience, according to the New York Post.

A California lawmaker introduced a bill on Monday that would give the descendants of slaves priority admissions into the University of California and California State University schools, the state’s two public university systems.

The bill would change a precedent set nearly 30 years ago. Since 1996, California’s Proposition 209 has prohibited public schools, including the University of California and California State University, to use race as a factor in the admissions process.

California has long employed race-blind admissions efforts, which consider socio-economic status and location to identify disadvantaged students from immigrant or ethnic backgrounds.

Ukrainian soldiers refusing to report for duty or walking away from their front-line positions are becoming an increasing problem for Kiev. One Ukrainian lawmaker said that there have been as many as 200,000 desertions. 

Ukrainian officials and soldiers told the AP that “Facing every imaginable shortage, tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops, tired and bereft, have walked away from combat and front-line positions to slide into anonymity.”

“Some take medical leave and never return, haunted by the traumas of war and demoralized by bleak prospects for victory,” writes The Associated Press. 

“Others clash with commanders and refuse to carry out orders, sometimes in the middle of firefights.”

In an interview for the industry magazine “Airliners,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary attacked German politicians, calling them “a government of idiots,” criticizing in particular the Greens, whom he accused of “stupid solutions,” reports DoRceczy.

“I don’t think the next government of Germany will be any better,” he said.

Ryanair’s boss described the German aviation market as one of the worst in Europe, calling Berlin’s BER airport “dysfunctional,” adding that the airport could only function as “a regional airport at best.”

According to him, high fees of over €50 per passenger are a key reason why the German aviation industry is only slowly recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.

This is why Ryanair has already reduced its German capacity from 16 million to 13.5 million seats.
