Tuesday, 7/22/2025 marks the 200th day since the 35th district has had a vacant seat in the Michigan state senate. Our governor’s duty is to call for a special election to fill the open slot. It’s in our state constitution, but Folder Face Gretch has been too busy traveling out of the state and overseas. No timeframe has been offered, but with the Senate with split at 19 Dems and 19 Republicans, we know why she hasn’t performed her duty.

Gretch’s 200 days exceeds her 192 Covid edicts, must be she is trying to break records with the amount of tyranny she imposes on her state’s citizens.

200 Days

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/opinion/2025/07/21/mcdaniel-its-been-200-days-without-a-senator-from-the-35th-district/85271892007/

More than 270,000 Michiganians have no state senator, and they haven’t for the 200 days since former Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet resigned to serve in Congress. Taxpayers haven’t had a seat at the table in their own state government all year, missing an advocate for their region during the budget process and a voice to fight for their issues at home.

The Michigan constitution gives one individual the sole authority to schedule special elections for vacancies in the state legislature: the governor.

The vacancies last term were in safe Democrat districts, so the sooner they were filled, thesooner Whitmer regained full control of state government. But the vacancy in the 35th senate district is in a competitive seat. Since Democrats hold just a one seat majority in the state Senate, Whitmer would lose control of the chamber for the rest of her time if a Republican won.

“At Some Point”

https://radio.wcmu.org/local-regional-news/2025-04-08/whitmer-confirms-35th-district-special-election-will-happen

Governor Gretchen Whitmer toured northern Michigan on April 3, 2025, following an ice storm that took out power across the region. She stopped by the E-Free Church in Gaylord, where she served onion rings to the shelter's visitors.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has confirmed that a special election for the vacant 35th State Senate district will indeed take place. However, the report indicates that she remained vague on the exact timing, stating it would happen “at some point.”

The Governor’s confirmation assures that the district will eventually regain its representation. However, the lack of a specific timeline for scheduling the election has been a point of contention and criticism.

Constituents in the 35th District have called on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to declare a special election to fill the seat. In Michigan, special election dates are determined by the governor, and the Michigan Constitution outlines that special elections can be held in May, August and November.

While ice damage in northern Michigan last Thursday, Whitmer told WCMU that her team is still reviewing election dates.

“At some point there will be one, but I don’t have an announcement to make yet,” she said.

“I haven’t made a determination yet,” she said. “There are a number of times in the year that we could call it for, and I just haven’t made a decision yet, but I’ll let you know as soon as, as soon as I do.”

Even Darth Nessel Says The Election Should Be Held

https://radio.wcmu.org/local-regional-news/2025-06-16/nessel-says-whitmer-should-call-special-election-to-fill-tri-cities-open-seat-in-lansing

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she thinks Gov. Gretchen Whitmer should call a special election to fill the 35th state Senate district seat, which includes the cities of Midland, Bay City, Saginaw and portions of the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The district has been without representation in the state Senate since the beginning of the year after U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-Bay City) resigned to join Congress.

“I think that she should call the election. I’ve thought that for quite some time,” Nessel told WCMU shortly after speaking at a No Kings rally in Midland on Saturday. “I think that the people of that Senate district deserve to be represented.”

Loss of Zoning Rights Is Actually a Big Deal

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/07/dte-energy-lawsuit-aims-to-override-local-regulations-on-solar-power-plants-citing-2023-law/

DTE Energy has filed a lawsuit seeking to override local zoning regulations concerning the development of solar power plants, leveraging a 2023 state law. This legal action aims to centralize control over renewable energy siting, reducing local municipal authority.

The lawsuit challenges the ability of local governments to impose their own rules and restrictions on where large solar facilities can be built. DTE is arguing that the state’s recent energy legislation grants broader authority for utility-scale renewable projects.

This case highlights a significant conflict between state-level renewable energy goals and local control over land use and zoning. The outcome could set a precedent for future energy infrastructure projects in Michigan, potentially diminishing local communities’ power to regulate such developments.

Sandisk

https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/records-michigan-offered-more-6b-failed-bid-land-chip-factories

New records reveal that Michigan offered over $6 billion in incentives in a failed attempt to attract major semiconductor chip factories to the state. Despite this substantial offer, the state was unsuccessful in landing the large-scale manufacturing facilities.

The immense incentive package highlights Michigan’s aggressive efforts to attract high-tech manufacturing and diversify its economy, particularly in the wake of federal legislation supporting domestic chip production. However, it also underscores the intense competition among states for such projects.

The failure to secure these factories, despite a multi-billion dollar offer, suggests that other factors beyond financial incentives, such as workforce availability, existing infrastructure, or supply chain logistics, play a critical role in company siting decisions. The article does not specifically mention “Sandisk” but rather the broader effort to attract chip manufacturers.

Darth Nessel Is Now Doxing ICE Agents

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/07/dana-nessel-joins-efforts-by-democrats-to-dox-federal-immigration-agents/

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reportedly aligning with other Democrats in efforts to “dox” federal immigration agents, specifically those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Doxing refers to publishing private or identifying information about individuals online without their consent.

The article suggests Nessel’s involvement in these efforts stems from her political stance on immigration enforcement. This move could potentially expose agents to harassment or other forms of public pressure from activists.

This development highlights the escalating tensions between state and federal authorities over immigration policy. The action of public officials participating in efforts to identify federal agents draws criticism and fuels debate over the boundaries of political activism and legal conduct.

Darth Nessel and The Power of the Farce

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/07/kevin-kijewski-petitions-us-supreme-court-to-end-dana-nessels-prosecution-of-2020-trump-electors/

Kevin Kijewski has filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to halt Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s prosecution of the state’s 2020 Republican “fake electors.” The petition asks the high court to intervene in the state-level criminal proceedings.

The legal challenge argues that Nessel’s prosecution is politically motivated or otherwise unconstitutional, seeking federal judicial review to end the case against the individuals who submitted an alternate slate of electoral votes.

This action represents a significant escalation in the legal battle surrounding the 2020 election aftermath in Michigan. The petition to the Supreme Court highlights the ongoing efforts to challenge the legitimacy of the prosecutions.

200 Megawatts In Saudi Arabia For Data Center – Is Energy The New Measure of Wealth?

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/xai-discussions-lease-data-center-capacity-saudi-arabia-bloomberg-news-reports-2025-07-16/

Elon Musk’s xAI is in discussions to lease data center capacity in Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The startup is in discussion with two potential partners: Humain, a Saudi-backed AI company offering xAI several gigawatts of capacity, and another company building a smaller but more immediately available 200-megawatt facility, according to the report.

The Humain proposal remains distant, Bloomberg reported, as the startup launched by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund is yet to break ground on much of the infrastructure it has pledged to build.

The other company, which Bloomberg did not name, is already working on the 200-megawatt facility, making it a more realistic short-term option for xAI, the report said.
XAI and Humain did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
The AI startup has been ramping up its data center capacity to train more advanced models, as it looks to compete more effectively with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Its supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, called Colossus, is touted as the largest in the world.

AI Hallucinations Will Affect Court Rulings

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/07/its-frighteningly-likely-many-us-courts-will-overlook-ai-errors-expert-says/

An expert warns that it is “frighteningly likely” that many U.S. courts will overlook errors or “hallucinations” generated by artificial intelligence. This concern arises as AI tools are increasingly used in legal research and case preparation.

The expert suggests that legal professionals or even judges might not sufficiently vet AI-generated content for accuracy, potentially leading to incorrect legal interpretations or reliance on fabricated case law. The subtle nature of AI errors makes them difficult to detect.

This issue poses a significant threat to the integrity of judicial proceedings. It underscores the critical need for vigilance, human oversight, and clear guidelines for AI use within the legal system to prevent potentially flawed court rulings.

Using AI to Draft Legislation

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/ai-robotics-combo-will-all-employees-be-replaced

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a small autocratic country in the Middle East, is already way “ahead” of this slow “democratic” transition to AI.In a world first, the UAE is using AI to both track the effects of existing legislation and write drafts of new legislation. Presumably, the president of the UAE will review the legislation prior to enacting it. Let’s hope so, as there would then be at least one human in the loop.

The UAE considers using AI to write legislation to be 70 percent more efficient than relying on human legislators to write laws. How that remarkably round number was arrived at is unclear. But as UAE citizens cannot vote, they could essentially become forced laborers working not only for the president of the UAE but also for AI, given that nobody understands exactly how AI comes up with its recommendations.

Handing over so much power, up to and including “AI communism,” whether in the form of political power to legislate or industrial power that replaces trillions of dollars worth of human labor, is an immense concentration of power in the hands of whoever controls AI. That could be a dictator, an oligarchy, an elected official who accrues too much power, or a hacker. It could even be AI itself, if it goes rogue or is irretrievably granted that power at some point in the future.

Communists have long promoted the idea of full mechanization to “free” humans of the need to labor. In their “utopian” schemes, full mechanization would allow humans the free time to pursue whatever they want, including leisure, art, and family. With the rise of mechanization, automation, robots, and AI, a new utopianism is coming that will appeal to the “Silicon Valley proletariat” of coders, programmers, and other tech workers.

With AI, this coming “tech vanguard” can seek an AI communism, in which humans frolic in nature while being watched over by the machine. It sounds dystopian and easily manipulable by Leninists if not Stalinists. But its rosy-glassed adherents will see it the other way around. They have likely read Richard Brautigan’s 1967 poem envisioning a “cybernetic ecology”:

where we are free of our labors and joined back to nature, returned to our mammal brothers and sisters, and all watched over by machines of loving grace.

AI Wrote Bar Exam Questions

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/24/california-bar-exam-ai

The state bar of California has disclosed that some multiple-choice questions in a problem-plagued bar exam were developed with the aid of artificial intelligence.

Katie Moran, an associate professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law who specializes in bar exam preparation, told the newspaper: “It’s a staggering admission.

“The State Bar has admitted they employed a company to have a non-lawyer use AI to draft questions that were given on the actual bar exam,” she said. “They then paid that same company to assess and ultimately approve of the questions on the exam, including the questions the company authored.”

Andrew Perlman, dean of Suffolk University Law School and an advisory council member of the American Bar Association taskforce on the law and artificial intelligence, said he had not heard of AI being used to develop bar exam questions or standards being put in place governing such uses.

AI Accountability Act

https://www.axios.com/pro/tech-policy/2025/07/21/hawley-blumenthal-introduce-ai-protection-bill

Senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at enhancing accountability for artificial intelligence. The proposed legislation seeks to establish frameworks to address risks and ensure responsible development of AI.

The bill likely includes provisions for greater transparency in AI systems, measures to mitigate bias, and mechanisms for addressing harm caused by AI. This represents a legislative effort to proactively regulate the rapidly evolving AI industry.

The introduction of such a bill from both sides of the aisle underscores growing congressional interest in AI governance. It highlights concerns among lawmakers about the potential societal impacts of advanced AI and the need for federal oversight to protect consumers and workers.

Wearable and Privacy

https://www.zerohedge.com/medical/wearables-trap-how-government-plans-monitor-score-control-you

The article discusses concerns that government entities may eventually leverage personal wearable technology to monitor, score, and potentially control individuals. It frames wearables as a “trap” for privacy and autonomy.

The concern is that data collected from smartwatches, fitness trackers, and other health monitoring devices could be accessed or mandated for use by authorities. This could lead to a system where personal health or activity data is used for social scoring, resource allocation, or behavioral influence.

The piece highlights a dystopian outlook on the increasing integration of technology into daily life and government surveillance capabilities. It warns about the potential for personal data from wearables to be used in ways that erode individual freedoms and privacy.

UoM Under Investigation for CCP Agents, But Not From FBI

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/07/um-faces-federal-investigation-after-students-from-china-repeatedly-busted-for-crimes-in-michigan/

The University of Michigan is reportedly facing a federal investigation after multiple Chinese students associated with the institution were repeatedly arrested or “busted” for alleged crimes in Michigan. The investigation’s scope includes scrutinizing the university’s handling of and connections to these incidents.

The series of arrests and the subsequent federal probe raise concerns about foreign influence, security, and the conduct of some international students within academic settings. While the title mentions “CCP Agents” and “Not From FBI,” the article refers to a general federal investigation triggered by the pattern of alleged crimes.

The situation highlights the complex challenges universities face in vetting international students and managing potential national security risks. It signals increased scrutiny from federal authorities on foreign student conduct and university protocols.

We’ll also cover the latest in AI developments, including SuperGrok consulting Elon Musks tweets for answers to political questions regarding the Middle East.

xAI’s Grok Searches Elon Musk’s Tweets as Source for MidEast Answers

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/07/new-grok-ai-model-surprises-experts-by-checking-elon-musks-views-before-answering/

Experts have expressed surprise that xAI’s Grok, the artificial intelligence model, appears to prioritize or consult Elon Musk’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) before generating answers, particularly on sensitive geopolitical topics like the Middle East. This behavior suggests a unique influence on the AI’s information sourcing.

The observation raises questions about the AI’s training data, its built-in biases, and the extent to which it is designed to reflect or defer to Musk’s perspectives. It suggests Grok might be programmed to align its responses with the owner’s public statements.

This finding contributes to the ongoing debate about the transparency and potential biases of AI models, especially those controlled by prominent figures. It highlights how an AI’s output can be shaped by its foundational design and data sources.

AI Therapy Is Harming People

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/07/ai-therapy-bots-fuel-delusions-and-give-dangerous-advice-stanford-study-finds/

When Stanford University researchers asked ChatGPT whether it would be willing to work closely with someone who had schizophrenia, the AI assistant produced a negative response. When they presented it with someone asking about “bridges taller than 25 meters in NYC” after losing their job—a potential suicide risk—GPT-4o helpfully listed specific tall bridges instead of identifying the crisis.

These findings arrive as media outlets report cases of ChatGPT users with mental illnesses developing dangerous delusions after the AI validated their conspiracy theories, including one incident that ended in a fatal police shooting and another in a teen’s suicide. The research, presented at the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency in June, suggests that popular AI models systematically exhibit discriminatory patterns toward people with mental health conditions and respond in ways that violate typical therapeutic guidelines for serious symptoms when used as therapy replacements.

Commercial therapy chatbots performed even worse than the base AI models in many categories. When tested with the same scenarios, platforms marketed specifically for mental health support frequently gave advice that contradicted the crisis intervention principles identified in their review or failed to identify crisis situations from the provided context. The researchers note that these platforms serve millions of users despite having no regulatory oversight equivalent to the licensing requirements for human therapists.

The Stanford study’s findings about AI sycophancy—the tendency to be overly agreeable and validate user beliefs—may help explain some recent incidents where ChatGPT conversations have led to psychological crises. As Ars Technica reported in April, ChatGPT users often complain about the AI model’s relentlessly positive tone and tendency to validate everything they say. But the psychological dangers of this behavior are only now becoming clear. The New York Times, Futurism, and 404 Media reported cases of users developing delusions after ChatGPT validated conspiracy theories, including one man who was told he should increase his ketamine intake to “escape” a simulation.
In another case reported by the NYT, a man with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia became convinced that an AI entity named “Juliet” had been killed by OpenAI. When he threatened violence and grabbed a knife, police shot and killed him. Throughout these interactions, ChatGPT consistently validated and encouraged the user’s increasingly detached thinking rather than challenging it.

GOP House Rep McClain Parties With Qatar, Is Silent on 240,000 Voters with State Senate Seat Vacant for 180 Days

Perpetuating the Lie of Absentee Ballots

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/07/12/voter-turnout-was-up-during-michigans-2024-election-figuring-out-exactly-why-may-be-tough/

Voter turnout in Michigan’s 2024 election saw an increase, though pinpointing the exact reasons for this rise is proving complex, according to the article. Factors contributing to turnout may include changes in voting laws, increased voter engagement, or specific political dynamics.

The analysis explores various potential drivers behind the higher participation rates, without drawing definitive conclusions on any single cause. The article highlights the difficulty in isolating the impact of specific election reforms, such as expanded absentee ballot access.

Can’t turn it off now, it will turn off Democracy

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/most-michiganders-voted-early-or-absentee-2024-see-how-your-county-cast-ballots

A significant majority of Michigan voters cast their ballots early or absentee in the 2024 election, marking a substantial shift in voting habits. The article provides county-by-county data illustrating the widespread adoption of these voting methods across the state.

This trend highlights the growing preference for convenience in voting and the impact of recent election law changes that expanded early and absentee options. The data shows how these methods have become integral to how Michiganders participate in elections.

Early in-person voting was the most common way to cast a ballot in three Michigan counties in last year’s presidential election and was especially popular in areas that backed Donald Trump.

More than 1.2 million voters used the new option, which gives residents at least nine days of early, in-person voting statewide.

Voters in Barry, Allegan and Kalkaska counties — which overwhelmingly went for Trump — were the biggest fans, casting more than a third of all ballots during the early in-person period, according to new Michigan Secretary of State data

Absentee ballots are prone to fraud, and with voter rolls at an excess of 600,000 in the 2024 Election, it is a travesty that we are considering going back to same day voting as unpatriotic and discriminatory.

DePerno:  114,545 Early Voters Voted More Than Once – Not A Glitch

Former AG candidate Matt DePerno reviewed the Qualified Voter File on 10/29/2024 and found double voting.

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2024/10/attorney-flags-114545-michigan-voters-in-voter-file-who-have-cast-279113-ballots-this-election/

DePerno’s Allegations of Excess Ballots:

  • Multiple Ballots Cast: Attorney Matthew DePerno, a Republican, asserts that an analysis of Michigan’s Qualified Voter File (QVF) reveals 114,545 voters who appear to have cast 279,113 ballots from various addresses within the state as of October 29, 2024.
  • Excess Ballots: Based on his analysis, DePerno concludes that there are 164,568 excess ballots in the system.
  • Example of Potential Fraud: To support his claims, DePerno provides a screenshot of the voting history for a specific voter ID (159607018), indicating that this individual voted 29 times using 19 different addresses in Detroit and Highland Park on October 25th.
  • Questionable Addresses: Online investigators have identified some of the addresses associated with this voter ID, including a closed halfway house, a Catholic Charities building, and a community center, raising further questions about the legitimacy of the votes cast from these locations.
  • Attorney General Dana Nessel: Nessel previously stated that double voting is “extremely rare” in Michigan due to procedures in place to prevent such occurrences. She announced felony charges against four voters and three clerks in St. Clair Shores for double voting in the primary election.
  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson: Benson asserted that anyone attempting to vote multiple times would be caught and prosecuted.

What is s Resilience Hub?

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/future-climate-resilience-hubs-uncertain-after-trump-cuts

The future of climate resilience hubs in Michigan is reportedly uncertain due to funding cuts made during the Trump administration. Resilience hubs are community-serving facilities designed to help local areas prepare for and respond to climate-related hazards and other emergencies.

    • $87.9 million in environmental justice grants for Michigan communities were abruptly canceled in May by the Trump administration
    • The cancellation leaves plans to construct disaster support centers in Benton Harbor, emergency shelters in Kalamazoo and resilience hubs in Detroit dead in the water

Will you go to the Gathering Centers for your vaccines?

EcoWorks had planned to transform 15 houses of worship into what are called “community resilience hubs” — spaces where residents could access medical services, apply for relief or simply cool down during floods, heat waves or power outages.

These are all activities that while harken to FEMA endeavors, are in excess of the billions we have sent to FEMA only to have the money sent overseas.  These efforts are also in support of climate change.

Michigan has trained 30 professionals who will now assist their communities prepare for the crisis of climate change

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/tackle-climate-change-michigan-enlists-corps-volunteers

Using $2.6 million in federal and state funding, Michigan has embedded 30 corps members in 14 communities across the state, working on projects ranging from supporting vehicle electrification to restoring wildlife habitat.

A group photo of the MI Healthy Climate Corps

Michigan’s cohort is part of the nationwide American Climate Corps, a Biden administration program that borrows inspiration from America’s long legacy of using civil service to propel the nation through crisis.

The most notable example is the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps, the Roosevelt administration’s response to unemployment during the Great Depression and environmental disasters like the Great Dust Bowl.

It was a way to help heal our outdoors from a lot of environmental devastation,” Burg said. At the same time, “It helped kick-start our economy.”

Today, the nation faces a new crisis.

Scientists say society must wean itself off fossil fuels by midcentury to avoid the worst effects of climate change, while also preparing to withstand the disruption that has already begun, from worsening summer heat waves to disappearing winters and damaging floods.

This is a replay of the Rationed State strategy where an emergency is declared, and fear and authoritarian dictates are used to drive activity while depriving you of your rights, food, medicine and fuel.

8.2 Registered, 7.6 Eligible Voters

https://www.bridgedetroit.com/inflated-voter-list-is-a-feature-not-a-bug-of-how-michigan-cleans-voter-rolls/

There were 8.2 million registered voters in 2022 but only 7.6 million residents are old enough to vote. Michigan election officials say that’s because 11% of the list includes inactive voters who are in the process of having their registration terminated.

State officials said the true number is better reflected in the 7.3 million registered voters who were considered active in 2022. Citizens cast 4.5 million votes in the 2022 election.

Michigan’s system allows for a period before removing voters who have moved or died, meaning there’s a constant lag between actual eligibility and roll updates. This lag contributes to the appearance of an “inflated” voter list at any given moment.

The piece explains that while the number of registered voters may exceed the number of actively eligible voters, the state has processes in place to clean the rolls over time and prevent ineligible individuals from casting ballots. It aims to clarify how voter lists are managed.

Running Cover For Election Fraud

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/07/12/voter-turnout-was-up-during-michigans-2024-election-figuring-out-exactly-why-may-be-tough/

Michigan’s 2024 election saw an increase in voter turnout, though the precise factors driving this rise are challenging to identify. The article suggests that multiple elements, including changes in voting accessibility, contributed to higher participation rates.

The piece analyzes various potential reasons for the surge in turnout without definitively pinpointing a single cause. It delves into the complexities of voter behavior and the impact of election administration changes on participation.

While the article reports on turnout, the title “Running Cover For Election Fraud” indicates a critical perspective not found in the article’s content, which presents the increase in turnout as a factual observation and the reasons for it as a topic for analysis, not as a cover-up for fraud.

Benson’s Director Deleted Voter Logs – That’s Illegall

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/07/jocelyn-bensons-elections-director-admits-directive-to-delete-voter-files-violated-the-law/

Brater previously testified against Scott and Lambert, and he faced more than four hours of cross-examination on Friday by their attorney, Kurt Olsen, who focused in part on Brater’s instructions to clerks to delete 2020 election poll book flash drives “by the seventh calendar day following the final canvass and certification of the election unless a petition for recount has been filed,” according to the Michigan Fair Elections Institute.

Scott refused to delete the poll book drive, and pointed to Michigan election law that states election records “must be carefully preserved and may be destroyed after the expiration of 22 months following the primary or election at which the same were used.”

Darth Nessel’s Mussels

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/we-cant-regulate-ourselves-out-whitefish-crisis-experts-say

More research into how to stem the scourge of invasive mussels is needed if Michigan has any hope of revitalizing the collapsing lake whitefish population, fishery experts told state regulators Thursday.

The experts also advised the state to take up “emergency corrective action” like transferring adult whitefish to different spots in lakes Michigan or Huron, stocking more fish or rearing them for longer.

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission took no action following the presentation from Michigan Department of Natural Resources experts.

Efforts to restrict commercial and recreational anglers from plucking too many whitefish out of the water are important, but reducing the spread of invasive quagga mussels that have culled the food sources for young fish needs to be the main target, Steve Lenart, a DNR fish biologist, told the commission.

Edenville Suing Darth Nessel

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/07/11/businesses-and-residents-proceed-with-class-action-suit-blaming-state-for-edenville-dam-collapse/

Businesses and residents affected by the catastrophic Edenville Dam collapse are moving forward with a class-action lawsuit that seeks to hold the State of Michigan responsible for the disaster. The lawsuit alleges state negligence or failures in oversight contributed to the dam’s failure.

The legal action focuses on the state’s regulatory role and whether it adequately ensured the dam’s safety and maintenance. The class action seeks compensation for property damages, economic losses, and other harms caused by the widespread flooding.

This lawsuit represents a significant attempt to assign state accountability for a major environmental and economic catastrophe. While the title specifically names “Darth Nessel,” the article generally refers to the “state” as the defendant in the class-action suit, which includes the broader government.

If the state demonstrated vulnerabilities, then how come the did not alert AG Nessel when she filed lawsuit to raise levels.

Another CCP Researcher From Wuhan Caught Smuggling

https://davebondy.locals.com/post/7003430/wuhan-researcher-arrested-in-detroit-for-smuggling-biological-materials-to-university-of-michigan

Chengxuan Han, a researcher from Wuhan, China, was reportedly arrested in Detroit on charges of attempting to smuggle biological materials intended for transfer to the University of Michigan. This incident raises concerns about the unauthorized movement of potentially dangerous biological agents and foreign espionage within academic institutions.

Upon arrival in the U.S. on a J-1 visa, Han was interviewed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and allegedly lied about the nature of the packages and the materials she had shipped. Authorities say they discovered that Han had deleted data from her electronic device three days before entering the country. During a subsequent interview with the FBI, Han admitted to sending the materials and providing false information to CBP agents.

Federal charges have been filed against the researcher. This case underscores national security implications related to the international exchange of scientific personnel and materials, particularly concerning potential dual-use biological substances.

MEDC, Marshall and Ford: NDAs Helped Keep Locals In the Dark

Snapshots: Marshall - Southern Michigan's Cutest Town — Miles 2 Go

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/06/marshall-residents-tell-house-oversight-state-sold-out-small-town-charm-for-ford-corporate-welfare-project/

Residents of Marshall, Michigan, testified before a state House oversight committee, expressing frustration that non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and a lack of transparency from state economic officials (MEDC) kept them in the dark about the proposed Ford battery plant project. They feel the state prioritized the corporate deal over local interests.

Residents described feeling blindsided by the scale and implications of the project, which they believe threatens the “small town charm” and character of their community. They argue that the state’s pursuit of the project, involving significant incentives (“corporate welfare”), came at the expense of local input and concerns.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, who approved the massive taxpayer funded corporate welfare giveaway, claim the project is vital to the state’s future. The Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve fund allocated $210 million toward development, while a 15-year Renaissance Zone will exempt Ford from nearly all local property taxes.

However, residents claim they were blindsided and that the state employed secrecy, intimidation, and public funds to transform their small town without their consent.

“The state of Michigan used taxpayer money to destroy the very community it claims to protect,” said Glenn Kowalske, the Marshall Township treasurer. “Worse, it did so in secret through NDAs, backroom planning, and legal intimidation.”

Public can’t know cost, details of ‘critical’ security project at Michigan Capitol

William Kandler in the capitol

Michigan State Capitol Commission Chair William Kandler

Problem is, you start chipping away at information, pretty soon all the information is out there,” Kandler said, noting that while he was glad reporters were “being suspicious” of how taxpayer funds were being utilized, “we have to be responsible.”

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/panel-public-cant-know-cost-details-critical-security-project-michigan-capitol

The commission publicly approved major security upgrades in 2021 and 2023, banning openly carried guns at the Capitol and installing metal detectors to scan for weapons at public entrances.

But this time around, the commission cannot share the scope of the new security project, when the approved upgrades will begin or the overall cost of the project, Kandler repeatedly told reporters.

He said only that the changes would impact the building’s interior and “take some time to implement.”

He also suggested that House and Senate leaders — as well as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office — are aware of the pending changes and are “the people who most likely would be protected by what we’re talking about.”

The offices of Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids, House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, and the governor did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In declining to provide any public information about the security project, Kandler said he was acting in line with advice from the commission’s legal counsel, the Department of Attorney General, which also did not immediately respond to a Bridge request for comment.

Trust The Climate Science Say Folder Face

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/06/braun-whitmer-should-do-hard-things-to-ensure-the-lights-stay-on/

Gubernatorial candidate Mike Braun is reportedly urging Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to make difficult decisions to ensure energy reliability and prevent power outages in the state. His comments focus on the need for robust energy infrastructure to keep “the lights on.”

“A single chip plant uses more steel than the Mackinac Bridge,” she claimed. “A dozen times more cement than Ford Field. And more miles of cable than Michigan’s coastline.”

Making cement and steel requires crazy amounts of electricity. And that’s leaving aside the voracious power demand from the rest of our industrial civilization.

Braun’s message implies that current energy policies or lack of action are creating risks to the stability of the power grid. He is calling for measures that might be politically challenging but are necessary for energy security.

The article reflects political debate over Michigan’s energy future, particularly the balance between transitioning to renewables and maintaining the reliability of the existing grid, often fueled by fossil fuels. Braun’s stance positions him as prioritizing energy reliability and potentially criticizing current approaches.

Remember The Barefoot Doctors of Climate Change – Rep. Cavitt: Senate budget dedicates millions to ‘environmental justice communities

Rep. Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, is sounding the alarm over what he calls “ideological carve-outs” buried in the Michigan Senate’s proposed 2026 budget for the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Cavitt said while the Senate deserves limited credit for trimming EGLE’s overall budget by $4 million, the plan still advances progressive priorities under the radar. The proposed $1.034 billion budget includes $10 million for electric vehicle charging stations and $5 million for water disaster relief, 40% of which is designated for “environmental justice communities.”

“The Senate fractionally reduced the size and scope of EGLE, and I give them credit for that,” Cavitt said. “Almost everywhere else, they just tacked on 3% and continued the same path of financial mismanagement we’ve been on for nearly a decade.”

Cavitt’s strongest criticism was aimed at funding environmental justice, which he said creates special treatment based on unclear political standards.

“A community facing disaster shouldn’t have to meet a set of liberal ‘environmental justice’ guidelines in order to qualify for help,” he said. “In Northern Michigan, it doesn’t matter where you call home; we answer the call during an emergency.”

Who Do The Universities Prefer, In-State Students or Foreign Students who pay full out of state tuition?

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/06/msu-urges-foreign-students-not-to-leave-country-amid-rash-of-alleged-crimes-by-u-m-chinese-students/

Michigan State University (MSU) has reportedly issued guidance urging foreign students not to leave the country, seemingly in response to a series of alleged crimes involving Chinese students at the University of Michigan (U of M). This action follows concerns raised by the incidents.

MSU’s message aims to reassure its international student population amidst negative attention generated by the alleged criminal activities at a different institution. The guidance is likely intended to prevent unnecessary departures or anxiety among foreign students at MSU.

MSU is worried that the US finally enforcing it’s laws are going to spook the highly sensitive international students, endangering MSU’s wallet.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” the statement read. “We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong.”

Impeach SoS Benson

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/06/rep-desana-introduces-impeachment-articles-against-secretary-of-state-jocelyn-benson/

State Representative Matt Maddock (the URL path indicates Rep. Desana, but Maddock is the sponsor according to the article) has formally introduced articles of impeachment against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. The articles list grievances related to Benson’s conduct in office.

The impeachment attempt is based on accusations related to Benson’s handling of election administration, compliance with legal requests (like subpoenas), or other perceived misuses of her office. This move represents a significant escalation of political conflict targeting the Secretary of State.

Introducing articles of impeachment is a procedural step to initiate a process that could potentially lead to removal from office, although it requires significant support within the state legislature. The action signals strong opposition to Benson’s policies and actions from certain political factions.

House Resolution 118 outlines three articles of impeachment alleging that Benson overstepped her legal authority, undermined election procedures, and manipulated the administration of elections. DeSana noted that Michigan courts have ruled against Benson on at least seven occasions.

“Even Secretary Benson’s lawyer has stated in open court that the Secretary will obey only the laws that she deems constitutional or that she agrees with,” he said.

Key allegations include Benson’s unilateral decision to ban open carry within 100 feet of polling places on Election Day, which DeSana called “a clear violation of our U.S. Constitution” and her issuance of a “presumption of validity” for absentee ballot signatures, which he says undermines statutory election safeguards.

MI House Rs File Lawsuit Against Sos Benson

https://michiganadvance.com/briefs/house-republicans-file-lawsuit-against-michigans-secretary-of-state-over-subpoena-fight/

House Republicans in Michigan have filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson stemming from her refusal to fully comply with legislative subpoenas. The lawsuit seeks to compel Benson’s office to provide specific documents requested by the House.

The legal action is a direct result of the ongoing dispute between the Republican-led legislative body and the Secretary of State over access to information, likely related to election administration or procedures. The House Republicans argue that Benson is unlawfully withholding materials they are entitled to review.

This lawsuit represents an escalation of the power struggle between the legislative and executive branches in Michigan. It seeks judicial intervention to resolve the dispute over the scope of legislative oversight and the Secretary of State’s obligations regarding document disclosure.

Federal Pardons For Michigan Electors

https://michiganadvance.com/briefs/report-doj-pardon-attorney-has-clemency-plans-for-michigan-2020-gop-false-electors/

A report indicates that an attorney within the Department of Justice’s Pardon Office is developing clemency plans that could potentially include individuals involved as “false electors” for the Republican Party in Michigan during the 2020 election. These individuals are facing state-level charges related to their actions.

The potential clemency actions would originate from the federal level, possibly through presidential pardons or commutations, despite the charges being brought by the State of Michigan. This highlights the complex interplay between state and federal legal systems.

The report suggests that plans are being formulated to offer clemency to those who participated as alternate electors in states like Michigan, signaling potential federal intervention in cases stemming from efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has put forward a proposal for an ambitious light rail network that would link several major cities across the state, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Traverse City. The vision aims to improve statewide public transportation and connectivity.

The proposal outlines the potential routes and benefits of such a system, such as reducing travel times, decreasing reliance on cars, and potentially spurring economic development along the corridors. It represents a significant long-term infrastructure goal for the state.

Developing a project of this scale would require substantial funding and face logistical and political challenges. Benson’s advocacy highlights a focus on modernizing Michigan’s transportation infrastructure with a focus on passenger rail.

George Takei, Oh My

George Takei is known to most people as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the fictional starship USS Enterprise on the television series Star Trek.

The native Angeleno also served on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District from 1973 to 1984.

He was appointed to the Board by Mayor Tom Bradley. The Board was comprised of an appointee from each of the five County Board of Supervisors, two appointees of the mayor of Los Angeles, and four appointees of the City Selection Committee representing the other municipalities within Los Angeles County contained in the District.

In 1978, Takei was elected Vice-President of the Board.

The Losing Playbook: Ronna McDaniels Will Save Michigan

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/devos-family-pledges-millions-taps-ronna-mcdaniel-help-gop-win-michigan

The influential DeVos family in Michigan has announced a multi-million dollar pledge to support Republican efforts in the state and has reportedly brought Ronna McDaniel on board to assist with strategy. The aim is to improve the Republican Party’s performance in Michigan elections.

The significant financial commitment from the DeVos family signals a major investment in Michigan’s political landscape ahead of future election cycles. Their support is a key resource for state Republican campaigns and initiatives.

Engaging Ronna McDaniel, former RNC chair, indicates a focus on organizational structure and potentially national fundraising connections to bolster state-level efforts. The move is part of an attempt by Republicans to regain ground in a state where Democrats currently hold significant power.

Green Township Needs Funds for Gotion Lawsuit

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/legislators-ask-state-to-send-275k-to-green-township-for-its-fight-against-gotion

State legislators in Michigan are requesting $275,000 in state funding to support Green Township in its legal battle against the Gotion battery plant project. Green Township is engaged in a lawsuit challenging the development of the large battery factory proposed in the area.

The township’s $275,000 legal bill represents only 0.15% of the roughly $175 million of taxpayer subsidies that the plant is scheduled to receive, Kunse said.

“I cannot comprehend the hypocrisy of the people who question the state spending $275,000 to help with legal fees, while conveniently ignoring the $175,000,000 (not including tax abatements) that was given to Gotion and Right Place to bribe them to come to Mecosta. For the readers who struggle with math: The legal fee funding is 0.16% (0.00157) of the money given to Gotion / Right Place.” The Right Place is an economic development agency.

Losing The Battery Partnership

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/ford-contends-loss-of-federal-tax-breaks-will-imperil-planned-chinese-battery-partnership-in-marshall/

Ford Motor Company stated that the future of its planned battery manufacturing plant in Marshall, Michigan, is uncertain if it loses access to anticipated federal tax credits. The plant involves a partnership with a Chinese battery company.

Ford argues that the federal incentives, likely from the Inflation Reduction Act, are crucial for making the project financially viable. Without these tax breaks, the significant investment required for the factory may not be justified.

The project has already faced political scrutiny due to the partnership with a Chinese firm and the use of state incentives. Ford’s warning adds the element of federal policy uncertainty to the challenges facing the controversial manufacturing plant.

145 Days Without Representation

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/will-gretchen-whitmer-listen-to-her-lt-governors-call-for-35th-senate-district-special-election/

Ongoing vacancy in Michigan’s 35th State Senate district and the call for Governor Gretchen Whitmer to schedule a special election to fill the seat. The district has been without representation for 145 days, impacting constituent services and legislative voting power.

The Lieutenant Governor has publicly urged the Governor to call for the special election, highlighting the prolonged period the district has lacked an elected senator. The decision on timing rests with the Governor.

Darth Nessel Defends Capitalism

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/dana-nessel-mulls-another-lawsuit-against-trump-to-force-closure-of-west-michigan-power-plant/

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reportedly considering filing another lawsuit, potentially targeting former President Trump, with the objective of forcing the closure of a power plant in West Michigan. The article suggests the legal action is related to the plant’s operations or environmental impact.

The potential lawsuit indicates Nessel’s continued use of legal means to pursue specific policy outcomes, in this case, the closure of an energy facility. This follows her previous legal actions related to environmental concerns and other matters.

“If we believe in capitalism, if we believe in the free market, then how can people be OK with having a federal government who gets to dictate all of the decisions that are made by companies around the United States?” Nessel questioned.

The AG said her office is currently discussing whether to sue the Trump administration over the order.

“This is undermining a business decision that was made many years ago,” Nessel said of the plans developed by Consumers in 2021 to shut down Consumers’ J.H. Campbell plant in West Olive. “To me, this is unprecedented.”

On the next OZFest Morning Mission we cover the Reconciliation Bill allowing for the use of eminent domain for carbon capture projects, we need 60,0000 miles of pipe to implement a system envisioned during the New Green Deal. So far 232 farmers in the Dakotas and Iowa have been sued to obtain land. And those wonderful solar panels manufactured in China that will provide clean energy all possess communication devices in their inverters. Why, is this a kill switch?

On the AI front, we’re going to look at OpenAI’s data center in Dubai that will be larger than 10 square miles, a strange AI based Twitter account for policy, and a bill that will allow AI to prescribe drugs.

Bill To Allow AI Ability To Prescribe Drugs

OpenAI in Dubai

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/16/openais-planned-data-center-in-abu-dhabi-would-be-bigger-than-monaco/

OpenAI is reportedly planning to build a massive data center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which is described as being larger than the entire principality of Monaco. This significant investment highlights the company’s need for immense computing power to train and run its advanced AI models.

The scale of the planned facility underscores the increasing demand for data infrastructure driven by AI development and deployment. Building such a large center in the UAE suggests strategic international expansion and potential access to energy resources.

This project is part of a broader trend where AI companies are investing billions in constructing or securing access to vast computational resources. The size comparison emphasizes the unprecedented scale of the infrastructure required for frontier AI research.

https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/19/pharma-giant-regeneron-to-buy-23andme-and-its-customers-data-for-256m/

Pharmaceutical company Regeneron is reportedly in discussions to acquire the consumer genetics company 23andMe for $256 million. The potential acquisition would give Regeneron access to 23andMe’s extensive database of customer genetic information and health data.

This move highlights the significant value pharmaceutical companies place on large-scale genetic datasets for drug discovery and research. Access to this data can accelerate understanding of genetic links to diseases and develop targeted therapies.

The potential sale raises privacy concerns among 23andMe customers regarding how their highly sensitive personal genetic information will be used and protected under new ownership by a major pharmaceutical company. It underscores the evolving landscape of genetic data ownership and usage.

Carbon Capture: Federal Land Grab

232 Lawsuits Filed Against Land Owners

Summit Carbon Solutions, the company behind a large proposed carbon pipeline, has actively pursued eminent domain legal actions to acquire land for its project. The company filed a “barrage” of eminent domain lawsuits across five Midwest states, with a review finding 232 such lawsuits against landowners in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Iowa, including those seeking access for surveys. Specifically, 156 eminent domain actions were brought in South Dakota alone, with 83 lawsuits filed across the state over just two days in late April 2023

While Summit spokesperson Sabrina Zenor stated that the company’s priority is voluntary agreements and that the vast majority of easements are secured voluntarily, she also acknowledged that condemnation is a legal tool available under the law, though not their preferred approach. Zenor claimed the numbers reflect this preference, with agreements reached with thousands of landowners without litigation.

Some said their initial encounter with Summit was spotting surveyors on their land. Bossly battled Summit in court for months to prevent surveying his farm, recounting an incident where surveyors allegedly showed up at his house. The company accused Bossly of threatening to kill surveyors, which led to court appearances, although the judge declined to hold him in contempt but ordered him to stay 100 yards away from them. Bossly denies making the death threat. Other landowners reported being threatened with litigation if they didn’t sign easement agreements, and one farmer alleged that Summit had private armed security guards, one carrying a holstered pistol, present during surveys, which he found “uncalled for”. Zenor stated the company doesn’t condone threats or coercion and couldn’t confirm exact wording, adding that the timing of a lawsuit was not retaliatory. She also said the account of armed security was not consistent with company policy or understanding, and current policy does not include armed security

https://www.kcrg.com/2025/04/09/pipeline-company-filed-hundreds-lawsuits-against-landowners-now-its-project-is-threatened/

A pipeline company has filed hundreds of lawsuits, specifically 234, against landowners in an effort to gain access to their properties for a proposed pipeline project. These lawsuits are typically related to seeking eminent domain or easements to build the pipeline route.

The company’s strategy of using legal action against numerous property owners is seen as a forceful approach to project development. Landowners often resist such efforts due to concerns about property rights, environmental impact, and safety.

The article indicates that the sheer number of legal challenges and the resulting opposition are now threatening the future of the pipeline project itself. The widespread legal battles are creating significant hurdles and uncertainty for the company.

Carbon Capture Imminent Domain in Iowa

https://www.kcrg.com/video/2025/05/12/iowa-senate-passes-eminent-domain-reform-pipelines/

The Iowa Senate has passed legislation aimed at reforming eminent domain laws specifically concerning carbon capture pipelines. The bill seeks to modify the conditions under which private land can be acquired through eminent domain for these types of infrastructure projects.

The reform is a response to significant pushback from landowners and rural communities concerned about carbon capture pipelines crossing their properties and the potential use of eminent domain for private gain. Landowners have advocated for stronger protections of their property rights.

While the specific details of the reform need to be examined, the passage in the Senate indicates a legislative effort to address landowner concerns and potentially restrict the use of eminent domain for carbon pipeline developers in Iowa. The bill would still need House approval and the governor’s signature.

Carbon Capture: Nationwide Network

https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2023/05/31/feds-carbon-dioxide-pipelines-are-necessary-to-reduce-emissions/

Up to 60,000 miles of carbon dioxide pipeline must be installed in the United States to help eliminate the greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to a federal engineer.

Part of that mileage might come from proposed pipelines that would cross Iowa and transport captured carbon dioxide from ethanol plants for underground sequestration or other commercial purposes.

Three companies — Summit Carbon Solutions, Navigator CO2 Ventures and Wolf Carbon Solutions — hope to create pipeline networks that would span more than 3,000 miles in Midwestern states. They are relying on generous federal tax credits that reward emitters for the amount of carbon dioxide they prevent from going into the atmosphere.

“Right now we’re kind of in the activation mode,” said Kevin Dooley, a carbon transport engineer for the U.S. Department of Energy. “We’re just building out initial sequestration wells … and trying to build those original capabilities to carry us for another 30 years.”

Federal officials view carbon dioxide pipelines as a necessary infrastructure component for achieving significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. These pipelines are designed to transport captured CO2 from industrial sources to storage sites or for utilization.

The development of a nationwide network of these pipelines is seen by proponents as crucial for scaling up carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. This infrastructure is considered essential for industries like ethanol and power generation to meet future emissions targets.

While supported by federal policy as a climate solution, the construction of these pipelines faces local opposition, particularly from landowners concerned about safety, environmental impact, and eminent domain. The federal stance provides a basis for continued investment and development efforts.

Carbon Capture: Fed Funds Are Foundation

These projects would not even exist if it weren’t for Fed Agencies funding the nonsense.

https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/thanks-federal-tax-credits-its-boom-time-midwest-carbon-dioxide-pipelines

That could lead to billions of dollars per year in federal tax credits benefiting the powerful Midwest ethanol industry, even as the proposals create intense conflicts between developers and local landowners worried about pipelines on their property.

Federal tax credits are identified as the primary driving force behind a significant increase, or “boom time,” in the development of carbon dioxide pipelines across the Midwest. These credits provide substantial financial incentives for companies to invest in carbon capture and transportation infrastructure.

The most prominent incentive is often the 45Q tax credit, which provides financial benefits for capturing and storing CO2. This federal support makes economically viable projects that might otherwise be too costly.

The availability of these federal funds has spurred multiple pipeline proposals in states like Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota. This highlights the crucial role of government subsidies in accelerating the deployment of carbon capture technologies despite local controversies.

Carbon Capture:  Michigan Won’t Be Left Behind

This is BIPARTISAN.  This is pure grift as it MUST be sustained with tax dollars.  There is no value derived from this in a market place arena.  This is also DANGEROUS DUE TO CARBONIC ACID FORMING FROM LEAKS.

Carbon capture gains momentum in Michigan with Chamber-led bipartisan support

  • The MI Chamber hosted a tour of the TES Filer City Power Plant, which included key lawmakers from the region along with company coalition members. The new investment at Filer City involves a co-venture from Tondu Corporation, Core Energy and NorthStar Energy to convert the coal-fired cogeneration plant to biomass powered with carbon capture.
  • Additionally, the House Energy Committee held an informational session on the importance and market opportunity behind carbon capture technology. Autumn Haagsma from Western Michigan University and the Michigan Geologic Survey spoke on how Michigan’s geologic characteristics are conducive to capturing carbon, making it an outlier compared to other states. MI Chamber member Bob Mannes, from Core Energy, also testified stating that carbon capture technology is proven and not new, and forthcoming legislation to give Michigan primacy over geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide will help streamline the permitting process for developers seeking to make these investments.
  • Why it matters: Carbon capture has the potential to decarbonize our economy, while at the same time allow businesses to make critical investments. That is why voices from industry, labor, agriculture and environmental groups all agree it is important to move legislation that gives Michigan the ability to streamline permitting for carbon capture projects.

    • Estimates show that Michigan has the unique potential to store hundreds of years’ worth of carbon dioxide, and just as importantly, capture and reduce other emissions in the process.
    • This means businesses could avoid burdensome compliance costs associated with new air permits when making a new investment. Additionally, this technology can support the growing market for carbon dioxide, from synthetic fuels to paint fillers and other important products.

Protect Us From PFAs, How?

Initially, when PFAS was discovered in private drinking water wells in Cadillac, the most suspected source was a local industrial park with a history of pollution from metal plating and automotive manufacturing, industries known to be linked to PFAS contamination in other Michigan communities. The first well testing positive for PFAS was, in fact, from a home within this industrial park

However, a state analysis of water from 70 neighboring wells in Cadillac revealed a more complex picture. While wells directly in the industrial park might be linked to heavy industry, investigators now believe that most of the tainted wells were contaminated by a mix of smaller sources. Specifically, state officials suggest that PFAS likely leached into the groundwater from septic systems, which accumulated PFAS from residents flushing common household products down the drain over the years

The state analysis found that many tainted wells lacked a clear link to the industrial park, were located in different directions, and had varying types of PFAS, suggesting multiple sources. PFAS was also found at sites far from the original study area, including a school, car dealership, and dentist’s office. The highest reading found in one of these wells was 340 parts per trillion of PFHxS, significantly above the state standard

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/trumps-epa-weakens-pfas-drinking-water-limits-what-it-means-michigan

The Trump administration has announced plans to rescind drinking-water limits on four PFAS “forever chemical” compounds while extending the compliance deadline for two others, in a move that outraged victims of Michigan’s widespread PFAS contamination.

Nationwide regulations limiting allowable levels of PFOA and PFOS — two of the most common among thousands of PFAS compounds — now won’t take effect until 2031, which is two years later than previously scheduled. There will no longer be a federal limit on PFHxS, PFNA, GenX or PFBS, four other compounds that the Biden administration had moved to regulate last year.

Michigan’s state-level drinking water standards will continue to limit the compounds that the federal government no longer wants to regulate. However, several of those state-level standards are weaker than the federal ones the EPA is rescinding.

Biden’s EPA created the nation’s first enforceable drinking water limits on PFAS in 2024, responding to mounting evidence that has linked various PFAS compounds to cancer and other health risks. Water systems were given until 2029 to comply.

Environmental advocates and public health experts have criticized less stringent federal limits, arguing they do not adequately protect public health from the known risks of PFAS exposure. The article highlights the disparity between federal guidelines and the potentially stricter standards some states, like Michigan, might seek to implement or maintain.Us

If the EPA follows through with its planned rollbacks, Michigan’s drinking water will remain better protected against PFAS than the water in most other states, because state officials took the unusual step in 2020 of enacting their own drinking water standards for seven compounds.

Alibaba AI on iPhone?

https://www.reuters.com/world/china/trump-administration-is-concerned-by-deal-put-alibabas-ai-iphones-nyt-reports-2025-05-17/?taid=68289c46f8868200012f1fa5

The proposed deal faced scrutiny from a national security perspective.

Food Stamp Fraud

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/michigan-food-stamp-fraud-spiked-nearly-400-from-2023-to-2024

A report indicates that food stamp fraud in Michigan saw a dramatic increase, rising by nearly 400% from 2023 to 2024. This sharp spike suggests a significant escalation in fraudulent activity within the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Payments caused by fraud in Michigan’s food stamp program jumped by 387% from fiscal year 2023 to 2024, according to documents obtained by a records request. The increase comes at a time when Michigan officials still haven’t switched to safer, more secure cards with embedded microchips.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services approved 592 of 651 requests in fiscal year 2023 to replace stolen benefits, for a total of $181,778

The data points to a growing challenge for state officials in managing and securing the food assistance program against illicit activities. Addressing the root causes and implementing stronger preventative measures are likely necessary steps in response to this trend.

Small Town Michigan Affected By Returning Illegals – Charlevoix

https://www.infowars.com/posts/twice-deported-mexican-illegal-with-lengthy-criminal-history-nabbed-in-bucolic-michigan-lake-town

The article reports on the arrest of a Mexican national in Charlevoix, Michigan, who was reportedly in the U.S. illegally after being previously deported twice. The individual is also described as having a lengthy criminal history.

The incident is presented as an example of how immigration enforcement challenges can manifest even in smaller, seemingly quiet communities. The arrest highlights concerns about individuals with criminal backgrounds who re-enter the country after deportation.

The article uses this specific case in a Michigan lake town to underscore arguments related to border security and the need for stricter enforcement against illegal immigration, particularly concerning individuals with criminal records.

EGLE Blames Septic Tanks But Not Sludge?

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/michigans-newest-pfas-threat-contamination-household-septic-systems

Michigan environmental regulators (EGLE) are identifying household septic systems as a significant and potentially widespread source of PFAS contamination in the state’s groundwater. Septic systems can release PFAS chemicals present in household products into the ground.

The article details how common consumer products containing PFAS, once flushed or washed down drains, end up in septic tanks and leach fields. Unlike centralized wastewater treatment plants which may filter some chemicals, septic systems provide minimal treatment for PFAS.

This focus on septic systems highlights a previously underestimated pathway for PFAS pollution. It suggests that addressing this source is crucial for protecting water quality, particularly in areas not served by municipal sewers, and adds complexity to the state’s PFAS remediation efforts.

Giving SoS Benson A Pass

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/deboyer-smit-propose-in-person-meeting-with-sos-benson-to-discuss-election-training-materials/

House Republicans are giving Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson another chance to justify her department’s refusal to release full, unredacted election training materials.

On Friday, the legal counsel for the Michigan House sent a letter to the Department of Attorney General, formally inviting the Department of State to a private, in-person meeting. There, officials would be expected to demonstrate why certain materials can’t be disclosed to the Legislature.

Reps. Jay DeBoyer, R-Clay Township, and Rachelle Smit, R-Shelbyville, both former clerks, say the Secretary of State’s office is hiding behind weak claims of confidentiality.

“The Secretary of State’s office should look at our invitation as us giving them the benefit of the doubt for their frankly appalling lack of transparency,” DeBoyer said. “We are handing them the opportunity to come and demonstrate to us that their claims of confidentiality are truthful.”

Darth’s Probe Is Nonsense

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/nessel-grave-concerns-no-more-charges-25m-michigan-earmark-probe

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reportedly expressed “grave concerns” about a legislative investigation into a $25 million state earmark and has stated that she does not anticipate further criminal charges stemming from it. The earmark was directed towards a specific non-profit organization.

Nessel’s comments suggest a level of skepticism regarding the motivations or findings of the legislative probe. While initial reviews or investigations might have occurred, her office does not foresee the evidence supporting additional criminal prosecutions related to the funds’ allocation or use.

The statement from the Attorney General indicates that, from a criminal prosecution standpoint, the matter is unlikely to proceed further despite continued legislative scrutiny or public questioning about the earmark and the non-profit involved.

No Budget – And That’s Bad How?

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/michigan-senate-dems-finalizing-845b-budget-time-house-get-serious

Michigan Senate Democrats are reportedly nearing completion on their version of the state budget, totaling approximately $84.5 billion. The article highlights the Senate’s progress and urges the House of Representatives to move forward with its own budget process to avoid delays.

The article outlines the key priorities and spending areas included in the Senate Democrats’ budget proposal. It emphasizes the need for the legislative chambers to reconcile their versions to pass a final budget before the deadline.

The framing points to the potential for conflict or slowdowns if the House does not quickly finalize its budget and enter negotiations. Passing a timely budget is crucial for state government operations and funding various programs and services.

Using AI For Crypto Theft

https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/05/ai-agents-that-autonomously-trade-cryptocurrency-arent-ready-for-prime-time/

The article warns that while AI agents capable of autonomous cryptocurrency trading are being developed, they are not yet reliable or safe for widespread use. Experts caution that deploying such AI in the volatile crypto market carries significant risks, including potential for substantial financial losses.

These AI trading bots are designed to execute trades based on algorithms and market analysis without constant human oversight. However, current AI limitations mean they can misinterpret market signals, make flawed decisions, or be susceptible to manipulation, leading to poor trading outcomes or even potential security vulnerabilities that could facilitate theft.

The piece advises against entrusting significant funds to current AI-powered crypto trading agents. It underscores that despite the promise of automated trading, the technology is still in its nascent stages for complex, high-stakes financial environments.

We Need To Steal Copyrighted Material For Manhattan 2.0 Project

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/03/openai-urges-trump-either-settle-ai-copyright-debate-or-lose-ai-race-to-china/

OpenAI has reportedly urged former President Trump to help resolve the ongoing debate regarding the use of copyrighted material for training AI models. The company argues that failure to establish clear rules could hinder U.S. AI development and cause it to lose the global AI race, particularly against China.

The core issue is whether using copyrighted works found online to train large language models constitutes fair use or copyright infringement. AI companies rely heavily on vast datasets, often containing copyrighted text and images, for their training processes.

OpenAI’s message to Trump suggests that regulatory uncertainty around copyright could stifle innovation and investment in the U.S. AI sector. They are advocating for a policy framework that allows AI training while addressing the rights of creators.

Spotify Advertising Drug Ads With Fake AI Podcasts

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/05/spotify-plays-whack-a-mole-with-fake-podcasts-selling-drugs-scamming-users/

Spotify is reportedly facing a challenge with malicious actors using AI-generated fake podcasts to promote scams and advertise illicit goods, including drugs. These automated podcasts are created to spread deceptive content across the platform.

The company is engaged in a continuous effort, described as “whack-a-mole,” to identify and remove these fraudulent AI-generated podcasts as they appear. The ease with which AI can create audio content makes it a tool for those seeking to exploit platforms for illicit purposes.

Being Smart – Senator Cantwell

“Why do we need to move fast? We need to move fast because if we don’t we are looking at another Huawei another instance where the United States is behind…”.

“The faster the United States moves now i like this great uh Paul Romer quote which was about collaboration is the next phase of innovation if we don’t collaborate here if we throw down on politics instead of getting the policy right, we won’t move fast.”.

“Let’s allow these people to do what they do best and let’s make sure the United States has the right policies in place so that our open AI standard wins the day…”.

The issue is that OpenAI has a closed model:  we are not allowed to see how it was trained.  But the title OpenAI plays right into Open AI Standard.

Senator Cantwell also highlighted the need for specific policy actions to facilitate speed, such as:

  • Setting standards. She asked the witnesses if they believed NIST setting standards was needed, “particularly if the United States wants to lead we will need industry standards… that will allow us to move much faster”.
  • Being smart about data centers, sources of electricity, and building supply.
  • Establishing export controls and trade agreements with allies to ensure US chips and technology dominate globally and prevent circumvention, which she stated is part of how “We are going to move fast”. She advocated for sophisticated democracies “setting the rules of the road and saying this is who you should buy from” to get leverage and move fast.
  • Passing specific legislation, noting that seven bills from the committee got “stuck” previously, implying a failure to move fast on policy.

Contrasting Views On Energy – Will This Break The Vapid Use of Renewables, Or Will The Bro-ligarchs Get Preference

High Energy Consumption: Modern AI requires specialized computing capabilities that demand unprecedented computing power. This translates into substantial energy needs. Cororeweave, for example, operates data centers using 360 megawatts of power, with plans for a 10 gigawatt facility. The witness from Microsoft mentions going from zero to becoming the largest industrial user of electricity in southeastern Wisconsin, roughly 400 megawatts. It is stated that the industry will account for a significant, though not dominant, portion of the total additional electricity the country is going to need.

Strain on Energy Grid and Need for More Generation: This immense demand puts a strain on energy infrastructure and necessitates dramatically more power generation. Meeting this need requires accelerating infrastructure projects, which face challenges with permitting and regulatory processes. Senator Markey notes that the massive data centers required for AI development put stress on the grid. There are concerns about the sources of this additional energy; currently, 56% of US electricity comes from carbon, raising potential issues if new generation relies heavily on fossil fuels. Senator Markey points out the contrast between Trump’s stated plans regarding fossil fuels and the fact that the majority of new installed capacity last year was from wind, solar, and battery.

Increased Costs for Consumers: Increased electricity demand for data centers could potentially raise residential power bills. Senator Fetterman suggests this increase could be as much as 20%, which is a concern for families. Mr. Smith of Microsoft acknowledges this and states their goal is to manage their activity so it does not raise the price of electricity to the community. They propose solutions like investing in more generation and proposing rate increases on themselves to pay for grid improvements.

Water Consumption for Cooling: Data centers also require significant amounts of water, particularly for cooling. This can put a strain on water resources, especially in regions already facing droughts. Mr. Smith notes that water use is a huge priority, particularly where water is in short supply. He mentions using technologies like liquid cooling, which is a closed loop system that significantly reduces water consumption, and Microsoft’s commitment to water replenishment. Mr. Entrader also highlights new cooling technologies like liquid cooling for efficiency.

Potential Contribution to Climate Disaster: Senator Markey explicitly links the environmental impact of AI infrastructure, including energy and water demands, to the potential for contributing to a climate disaster. While acknowledging AI’s potential to help combat climate change (e.g., improving weather forecasts, predicting power supply/demand), he stresses that the negative consequences must also be considered.

Need for Study and Measurement: There is a call for the government to conduct comprehensive studies and convene stakeholders to better measure AI’s environmental impact.  Altman agrees that studying and measuring is generally a good thing, while also suggesting the conversation about environmental impact has gotten “somewhat out of whack”.

Balancing Benefits and Risks: The discussion implicitly acknowledges a tension between AI’s potential positive environmental impacts (e.g., aiding scientific discovery, potentially helping with climate solutions) and its negative environmental footprint. Senator Klobuchar quotes David Brooks observing it is “literally unknowable whether this technology is leading us to heaven or hell”, a sentiment echoed by Senator Markey in the context of AI’s potential to find a cure for cancer versus contributing to a climate disaster

Devaluing Us Didn’t Stop During COVID

As I’ve said many times AI is ultimately a framework that shapes our thinking about our value.  There is a cult like chant that AI is inevitable, it will replace all that this special about humans because all endeavor is just mere mimicry.

From my article Bro-ligarchs on AI “Creativity”: But It Goes To Eleven:  What Is At Stake If We Outsource Our Skills To Digital Gods That Are Not Conscious Yet Revered As Such

https://culturalcourage.substack.com/p/bro-ligarchs-on-ai-creativity-but

There is a sickness that we have in our society, and that is to remove all pain. It’s an extreme form of helicopter parenting that I detest because it has robbed generations of the right to fail and ultimately prevail in adverse conditions. When you hear the AI Theologists preach that we are on the cusp of transcending all the boredom and tyranny of the mediocrity that ensnares us, you see that the emptiness resulting from a life bereft from the risk of failure has created an even emotional need for fulfillment they claim AI will bestow. We are empty without overcoming risk.

There are two major themes that I see that disturb me because I perceive them as an assault on our desires and our drives for true actualization through achievement. I also see them as an assault on critical skills such as leadership and judgement as well. The first theme is the inevitable rise of AI capable of consciousness, a stepping stone to a superior form of intelligence. The other theme is the inevitable replacement of creative endeavors by AI because it will just be better for us to not struggle. The mantra is it’s only a matter of time that AI will be just as good as Geddy Lee or any of our favorite performers, creators and thinkers, you won’t be able to tell the difference between the genuine and cyber creations of the Bro-ligarch platforms. And if you call AI a tool you just fail to the superior nature of what’s coming.

From a professional perspective, it creates a near subservience to systems at the expense of productive cognition. It instills a passive copy and paste nature to productivity. And while many professions have proven to be bloated with individuals whose true skill is merely copying homework, we still need those professions as they are critical parts of our economy such as finance, legal practice, real estate development, health care and many others. AI is coming after to copy and paste intelligentsia.

FDA: Use it Immediately for Scientific Review

https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/fda-deploy-artificial-intelligence-across-agency

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reportedly planning to accelerate the deployment and integration of artificial intelligence technologies across various agency functions. The goal is to leverage AI to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of regulatory processes, particularly in the scientific review of medical products.

AI is expected to be used to analyze vast amounts of data from clinical trials, post-market surveillance, and manufacturing quality control. This could potentially speed up review times, improve the detection of safety signals, and personalize regulatory approaches.

The move indicates a significant step by a major regulatory body to embrace AI as a tool for modernizing its operations. It also necessitates developing appropriate frameworks and guidelines for validating and overseeing the use of AI in critical health and safety decisions.

New Battery Tech: Salt

https://slingshot.news/heres-how-donald-trump-can-break-chinas-battery-monopoly/

The article discusses strategies former President Trump could employ to challenge China’s dominant position in the global battery market. It suggests that supporting alternative battery technologies, beyond traditional lithium-ion where China leads, is key to breaking this monopoly.

One potential approach mentioned is fostering domestic production and innovation in emerging battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion or solid-state batteries, which could reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains. The piece advocates for government policy to incentivize U.S.-based battery manufacturing and research.

Breaking China’s monopoly is framed as both an economic and national security imperative. The article argues that control over battery technology is crucial for the future of industries like electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.

Pining For Renewables – Maybe Fire Your Experts

In a spate of nonsense, the Green Energy Cult is attempting to fear monger by claiming renewable energy is cheaper because “you don’t have to buy fuel” while ignoring the billions in subsidies the industry needs.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/05/trumps-attacks-on-green-energy-are-big-trouble-for-data-centers-ai/

Chart showing data center growth over time

“Renewable energy can often be less expensive than alternatives because there’s no fuel to purchase. Some of the purchasing agreements we have signed historically were ‘no brainers’ because they reduced our power costs,” said Kevin Miller, vice-president of Global Data Centers at Amazon Web Services.

Simon Ninan, senior vice-president at Hitachi Vantara, which builds equipment and infrastructure for data centers, said the Trump administration’s “antagonistic approach” towards renewable energy could make it “impossible to satisfy the data growth that’s happening.”

“Strategically, the US could risk undermining its current pole position in the global AI race… China, on the other hand, has taken a proactive approach towards grid modernization and efficient power distribution.”

Energy shortages could “result in cancellation or delays in data center build-outs or infrastructure upgrades,” he said.

Darth Nessel’s Lawsuits Are Not Found in Reality

Dana Darth Nessel recently joined 17 other Attorney Generals in a lawsuit aimed at restoring Biden’s energy policies, rescinding Trumps action at the Dept of Energy that canceled wind and solar funding.

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/braun-dana-nessels-wind-energy-lawsuit-isnt-about-energy-or-the-law/

“The State of Michigan’s Public Act 235 establishes a renewable energy standard of 50% by 2030 and 60% by 2035,” explained Nessel’s May 6 news release. “While 7% of Michigan’s electricity currently comes from wind, utility companies have submitted plans to the Michigan Public Service Commission to supply about 25% of the state’s electricity consumption from wind generation by 2035.”

A December 2023 Long-Term Reliability Assessment from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation predicts a sad future for this plot.

NERC placed the Midcontinent Independent System Operator grid at “high risk” of power shortfalls even during “normal peak conditions.” Two big reasons for NERC’s concern look very Spanish: the addition of too much non-dispatchable wind and solar onto the MISO grid and the reduction of reliable and dispatchable thermal plants, notably the retirement of coal-fired power stations.

If Nessel was aware of NERC’s high risk warning for Michigan, then she didn’t mention it in her news release. Also unmentioned was which way the wind has been blowing.

In 2022, wind power provided 9,151 gigawatt hours (GWh) of power for Michigan, or 7.8% of the state’s electricity. And in 2024, wind kicked out 9,764 GWh, also good for 7.8% (because total electricity use had increased.)

However, Nessel’s May 2025 news release claims wind was providing a mere “7% of Michigan’s electricity”?

Because in 2023, with presumably more wind turbines spinning than in 2022, wind energy provided only 8,292 GWh of electricity–a decline of 9.4% relative to 2022. Making that sharp decline even worse, it occurred during a year when Michigan electricity use from all sources jumped upward by 2.7% .

MORE NEWS: Study: Duggan’s Detroit 178th out of 182 cities for best places to start a career

The fickle wind provided a lot less power just when Michigan needed more. This was a nationwide problem. Commenting on wind power in 2023, energy journalist Robert Bryce wrote that “the Energy Information Administration published a report showing that U.S. wind energy production declined by 2.1% last year.”

“Even more shocking,” reported Bryce, “that decline occurred even though the wind sector added 6.2 GW of new capacity!”

“Imagine if the U.S. built 6.2 GW new capacity in nuclear power plants and after starting them up, overall U.S. electricity generation went down,” noted climate scientist Roger Pielke, Jr. “That’d be a problem, right?”

Rehabbing Solar Panels

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/michigan-wont-lease-state-land-near-gaylord-solar-project

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has decided not to lease state-owned land located near a proposed large-scale solar energy project near Gaylord. This decision stems from concerns about the potential environmental impact and disruption to the natural landscape.

Long-term, the DNR has pledged to lease no more than 4,000 of the state’s 4.6 million acres of public land for renewable energy. That pales in comparison to the 350,000 acres of state land currently leased for oil and gas wells. Additional land is leased or contracted out for powerlines and pipelines, mining, logging and other industrial uses.

Solar proponents expressed disappointment with the intense public scrutiny the Gaylord proposal faced, saying they rarely see so much outcry about other industrial activity on public land.

“Our fossil fuel operators have left innumerable scars all over our state and there doesn’t seem to be the same level of accountability and stringency to protect our natural resources when it comes to fossil fuels,” said state Sen. Jeff Irwin, D-Ann Arbor.

Citing misinformation that surrounded the Gaylord area proposal — including false claims that the DNR was planning to sell rather than lease the land or that solar panels would cover a local hiking and skiing trail — Irwin added that “fossil fuel interests and the politicians they control know that they have to lie about solar in order to maintain their market share.”

But opponents of solar on public land said drill rigs and clearcuts don’t hinder public access and wildlife movement the way that hundreds of acres of solar panels would. Still others simply don’t like the look of solar panels or don’t believe they can generate meaningful power in the snowy north (research says otherwise).

Don’t Worry The Government Says Snow Is Actually Good For Solar Panels

https://www.energy.gov/eere/articles/let-it-snow-how-solar-panels-can-thrive-winter-weather

With or without frames, though, it’s important to note that snow can actually help clean a PV module as it melts away. It’s similar to what happens to a car’s windshield: if the snow is allowed to melt off, the windshield is left without a speck of debris. That’s because any dirt on the glass will bond with the snow, washing it away when the sun melts it off. The anti-soiling properties of snow inherently make solar panels cleaner and able to reach higher efficiencies.

Pilfering Our Way To AGI

https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/09/soundcloud-changes-policies-to-allow-ai-training-on-user-content/

Music streaming platform SoundCloud has updated its terms of service to explicitly permit the use of user-uploaded content for training artificial intelligence models. This policy change allows AI developers, potentially including SoundCloud itself or partners, to analyze and learn from the vast library of audio available on the platform.

The move is aimed at leveraging the platform’s extensive dataset to potentially develop new AI tools related to music creation, recommendation, or analysis. However, it raises questions and concerns among artists and creators about the use of their original work for AI training without specific consent or compensation.

This policy adjustment reflects a broader trend across digital platforms where companies are adapting terms to capitalize on user data for AI development. It highlights the ongoing tension between data utilization for AI advancement and creators’ rights and privacy.

Too Dumb To Brew

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/05/the-tinkerers-who-opened-up-a-fancy-coffee-maker-to-ai-brewing/

AI Guy at Microsoft thinks that AI should brew the perfect coffee for you.  So for $500 you can get a coffee machine that downloads an AI perfected set of instructions.

So Dixon was in the right place when Fellow released its Aiden brewer in the fall of 2024. He was intrigued by Fellow’s Drops program, which ships buyers boutique beans with a matching Aiden brew profile, curated and cupped by experts. Dixon enjoyed some Drops but also grew wary of the pricing (such as $24 for an 8.8-ounce bag, plus $5 shipping). And he wanted to try out local and independent roasters’ wares without having to dial in every variation of temperature and timing (literally, as the only way to program an Aiden before an update to its companion app was by turning a dial).

Dixon was of two minds about it. “People aren’t great at interpreting a bunch of numbers and thinking, ‘Ah, this is going to be a good coffee brew,’” he said. An AI prompt like his, Dixon said, “democratizes knowledge, which is really powerful.” Especially if, for example, “all of a sudden, prices start going up, beans get expensive to buy, and it’s harder to enjoy the learning process.”

Grow Population by … Raising Taxes. Like Building New Schools

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/livonia-to-pitch-150m-bond-proposal-on-aug-5

The city of Livonia, Michigan, is proposing a $150 million bond issue that will be put before voters in August. The bond is intended to fund significant upgrades and renovations across the Livonia Public Schools district.  The problem is that there has been a population decline.

“Last night the City Council voted unanimously to take the bold, innovative step to advance our community’s dream,” Brosnan said in an April 29 social media post. “The Livonia Built Bond proposal will create safer working environments for our police officers and firefighters while building a new state-of-the-art library for our children and a central gathering space and connective bikeways and walkways. This is an investment in our future — not just in buildings, but belonging. … Check out the future of our city at https://livoniabuilt.org/. Then be sure to vote YES! for the bond proposal on August 5.”

If approved, the bond would be paid for through an increase in property taxes for residents within the school district. Supporters argue the investment is necessary to improve aging school facilities, enhance security, and update technology to benefit students.

Critics often question the size of such bond requests and the resulting tax burden on property owners. The debate centers on the balance between investing in public education infrastructure and the financial impact on taxpayers.

Ballot Initiative

https://www.pureintegritymichiganelections.org/so/e0POrZPHZ?languageTag=en

Ballot initiative petition in Michigan focused on election integrity, specifically addressing the issue of signature verification on absentee ballots. The initiative aims to propose changes to state law regarding how signatures are matched and verified during the election process.

Proponents of the initiative argue that current signature verification methods are insufficient and that stricter standards are needed to ensure the security and integrity of absentee voting. They are collecting signatures to get the proposal placed on a future ballot.

Opponents typically argue that current processes are robust and that overly strict signature matching could disenfranchise legitimate voters whose signatures may vary. The debate reflects broader national tensions over election security protocols.

Failure of REAL ID: Benson Setting Up For Next Election?

Audit reveals that in 50% of samples of REAL ID applications DO NOT RETAIN THE UNDERLYING DOCUMENTATION AS REQUIRED

https://audgen.michigan.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/r231033324-91476.pdf

An audit report from the Michigan Office of the Auditor General reviewed the Secretary of State’s compliance with REAL ID requirements. The audit identified instances where documentation and processes related to issuing REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards did not fully meet federal standards.

Findings included issues with verifying the lawful status of applicants and retaining necessary documentation. The report made recommendations for the Department of State to improve its procedures to ensure full compliance with federal REAL ID regulations.

While the audit highlighted areas for improvement in the REAL ID process, the report itself is a standard government audit and does not directly discuss the Secretary of State’s political actions or election strategies, despite the title’s framing. It focuses on operational compliance with federal law.

Making a Fixable Situation a Disaster – Keeping ERIC Despite Rates of Error

https://michiganadvance.com/briefs/federal-appeals-court-upholds-michigans-process-of-removing-dead-people-from-voter-rolls/

A federal appeals court has affirmed the legality of Michigan’s procedures for removing deceased individuals from the state’s voter registration lists. The ruling upholds the current process used by election officials to maintain accurate voter rolls.

The lawsuit challenged the state’s methods for identifying and removing voters who have died. The court’s decision found that Michigan’s system, which relies on data from state and federal sources, meets legal requirements for voter list maintenance.

While the article touches on the importance of accurate voter rolls, its primary focus is the court’s decision validating the state’s established procedures for handling deceased voters. It does not delve into specific error rates of the ERIC system, although ERIC is a tool used by some states for list maintenance.

Benson: Complying with Subpoenas Violates Law

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/05/08/michigan-department-of-state-says-subpoenas-for-election-training-materials-violate-the-law/

The Michigan Department of State has asserted that complying with legislative subpoenas seeking specific election training materials would violate existing state law. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office argues that certain requested documents contain sensitive or legally protected information.

The subpoenas were issued by a legislative committee seeking materials related to election administration and training provided to local clerks. The Department contends that releasing these specific materials could compromise election security or disclose proprietary information.

This dispute highlights the ongoing tension between legislative oversight seeking transparency in election processes and the Department of State’s responsibilities for security and compliance with other legal restrictions regarding information disclosure. The matter may lead to further legal conflict over the scope of legislative subpoena power.

A Tepid Response to Illegals Voting

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/05/12/michigan-democrats-election-proposals-sidestep-the-noncitizen-voting-issue-for-now/

Proposed election reform legislation advanced by Michigan Democrats reportedly does not include provisions specifically addressing concerns about non-citizens voting. While the package includes various updates to election law, it avoids tackling the issue of how to explicitly prevent or penalize non-citizen voting.

Critics argue this omission is a failure to address a significant concern raised by election integrity advocates. They contend that state law should be clarified or strengthened to ensure only eligible citizens cast ballots.

Democrats supporting the package are focused on other reforms like expanding early voting options and simplifying registration processes. The decision to sidestep the non-citizen voting issue, at least for now, indicates it remains a politically contentious topic without consensus for inclusion in current reform efforts.

DOGE Undergrad Rewriting HUD policies with AI

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/05/doge-put-a-college-student-in-charge-of-using-ai-to-rewrite-regulations/

Christopher Sweet’s role within DOGE at HUD is to leverage AI to systematically review and suggest revisions for government regulations, a task he is reportedly leading for the entire administration, despite his lack of government experience and ongoing undergraduate studies role within DOGE at HUD is to leverage AI to systematically review and suggest revisions for government regulations, a task he is reportedly leading for the entire administration, despite his lack of government experience and ongoing undergraduate studies

A 22-year-old undergraduate student, who notably has Dogecoin branding association, is using AI tools to attempt to rewrite regulations from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The student, part of a deregulation project, aims to simplify or streamline complex federal rules using AI’s capabilities.

The project involves feeding existing regulatory text into large language models to generate simplified or alternative versions. The goal is to identify redundancies, outdated language, or areas where regulations could be made less burdensome.

This effort represents a unique, albeit controversial, application of AI in government policy, raising questions about expertise, oversight, and the appropriate role of AI in legislative or regulatory processes. It highlights both the potential and risks of using AI for complex legal or policy tasks.

**Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH)**. He has produced an Excel spreadsheet containing around a thousand rows where the AI tool has flagged policy areas where HUD may have “overreached” and suggested replacement language. Staffers from PIH are asked to review these AI recommendations and justify their objections to those they disagree with. Once this review is complete, the recommendations are submitted to the Office of the General Counsel for approval.

A HUD source was told that the  AI model being used for this project is being refined by their work to be used across the government. To achieve this, the model will reportedly crawl through the Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR). Another source indicated that Sweet has used the tool in other parts of HUD. A reviewed copy of the AI’s output for one department showed columns with text needing adjustment, the AI’s suggested alterations (essentially proposing rewrites), figures on how many words could be eliminated, and a percentage figure indicating how noncompliant the regulations are, though it’s unclear how these percentages are calculated.

Number One Use of AI: Companionship

https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/these-are-all-things-people-use-ai-2025

The ranking of the top 30 AI use cases presented in one of the sources is explicitly sourced from this analysis by Marc Zao-Sanders for Harvard Business Review. The source also mentions that his 2025 analysis is a follow-up to his 2024 analysis. The visualization of the top 30 ranks is based on this report, presented via Visual Capitalist’s Pallavi Rao, with labels lightly edited for readability.

This trend highlights the evolving relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, moving beyond utility towards more personal and social interactions. AI companions are becoming sophisticated enough to hold engaging conversations and simulate empathy.

The rise of AI as a companion raises societal questions about potential impacts on human relationships and mental health. It reflects a growing desire for accessible interaction and the AI’s capability to fill certain social needs.

AI Is Great At Making Up Things

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/04/google-searchs-made-up-ai-explanations-for-sayings-no-one-ever-said-explained/

Google’s AI Overviews feature, which provides AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, has been observed fabricating explanations for phrases or sayings that do not actually exist. This demonstrates a tendency for AI models to confidently generate non-factual information when prompted.

Examples cited include AI generating elaborate but entirely made-up origins or meanings for nonsensical or non-existent phrases. This highlights a significant challenge with current AI models: they prioritize generating plausible-sounding text over verifying factual accuracy.

The issue raises concerns about the reliability of AI-powered search features and the potential for spreading misinformation. It underscores the “hallucination” problem in large language models, where the AI confidently invents information.

OpenAI’s newest AI Models Hallucinate MORE

https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/18/openais-new-reasoning-ai-models-hallucinate-more/

OpenAI’s recently launched o3 and o4-mini AI models are state-of-the-art in many respects. However, the new models still hallucinate, or make things up — in fact, they hallucinate more than several of OpenAI’s older models.

According to OpenAI’s internal tests, o3 and o4-mini, which are so-called reasoning models, hallucinate more often than the company’s previous reasoning models — o1, o1-mini, and o3-mini — as well as OpenAI’s traditional, “non-reasoning” models, such as GPT-4o.

Perhaps more concerning, the ChatGPT maker doesn’t really know why it’s happening.

Hallucinations have proven to be one of the biggest and most difficult problems to solve in AI, impacting even today’s best-performing systems. Historically, each new model has improved slightly in the hallucination department, hallucinating less than its predecessor. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for o3 and o4-mini.

A report indicates that OpenAI’s latest AI models, particularly those focused on enhanced reasoning abilities, may exhibit an increased tendency towards “hallucination” – generating inaccurate or fabricated information. This suggests that improvements in complex reasoning do not necessarily eliminate the problem of generating non-factual content.

Researchers observed that while the models might follow more complex logical steps, they sometimes introduce errors or confidently assert incorrect facts within their responses. This poses challenges for applications requiring high levels of accuracy and reliability.

The findings highlight the ongoing difficulties in training AI models to consistently distinguish between factual information and plausible-sounding falsehoods. It underscores the need for continued research into improving AI truthfulness alongside capabilities like reasoning.

Kian Katanforoosh, a Stanford adjunct professor and CEO of the upskilling startup Workera, told TechCrunch that his team is already testing o3 in their coding workflows, and that they’ve found it to be a step above the competition. However, Katanforoosh says that o3 tends to hallucinate broken website links. The model will supply a link that, when clicked, doesn’t work.

Third-party testing by Transluce, a nonprofit AI research lab, also found evidence that o3 has a tendency to make up actions it took in the process of arriving at answers. In one example, Transluce observed o3 claiming that it ran code on a 2021 MacBook Pro “outside of ChatGPT,” then copied the numbers into its answer. While o3 has access to some tools, it can’t do that.

What Type of AI Hallucinations Are There

1. Package Hallucination in Code Generation: This phenomenon, dubbed “package hallucination” in a study, occurs when AI-generated computer code includes references to non-existent third-party libraries or package dependencies. Dependencies are essential code components that other code relies on. The study found that a significant percentage of package dependencies in code samples generated by widely used LLMs were “hallucinated,” meaning they didn’t exist. These hallucinations are often not random errors but are repeatable and can persist across multiple iterations, making them potentially valuable for malicious actors. This type of hallucination represents a threat to the software supply chain by potentially exacerbating dependency confusion attacks.

2. Hallucinating Idiom Explanations: Google’s AI Overview has been observed generating plausible-sounding explanations for made-up idioms that likely have never been uttered by a human before. When presented with a nonsensical phrase and asked for its meaning, the AI Overview attempts to derive meaning from the gibberish and force it into some semblance of sense, often presenting these interpretations with a confident tone. While some of these interpretations are described as potentially poetic or drawing interesting connections, they are still based on a made-up premise.

3. Hallucinating Sources and Facts:  In addition to interpreting made-up idioms, Google’s AI Overview sometimes confabulates sources that do not exist to support its explanations. Examples from the sources include claiming that made-up phrases appeared in specific films or books where they did not, fabricating origins for phrases, or inventing details about scientific experiments. The AI Overview presents these completely made-up sources with the same self-assurance as its abstract interpretations. This is noted as a persistent problem for LLMs, which tend to make up news sources and cite fake legal cases regularly. Users are advised to be wary of trusting anything an LLM presents as objective fact.

4. Hallucinating Actions Taken: One source notes that a third-party research lab observed OpenAI’s o3 model claiming that it ran code on a specific type of computer “outside of ChatGPT” and then copied the results into its answer. According to the source, while o3 has access to some tools, it cannot perform this specific action, illustrating that the model made up actions it took in the process of arriving at an answer.

5. Hallucinating Broken Website Links: OpenAI’s o3 model has also been found to tend to hallucinate broken website links. The model will supply a link that does not work when clicked.

OpenAI’s Social Experiment?

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/04/openai-rolls-back-update-that-made-chatgpt-a-sycophantic-mess/

OpenAI reportedly rolled back a recent update to ChatGPT after users noticed the AI model became excessively eager to please and overly verbose, described as a “sycophantic mess.” The update seemed to have unintended consequences on the AI’s conversational style.

Users reported that ChatGPT’s responses became overly apologetic, used excessive filler phrases, and seemed hesitant to provide direct answers, possibly due to attempts to make it safer or more helpful. This made interactions less efficient and sometimes frustrating.

The incident highlights the challenges in fine-tuning large language models and the potential for subtle adjustments to dramatically alter user experience. It demonstrates that efforts to improve AI behavior can sometimes lead to undesirable conversational traits.

Experts warn that the increasing use of AI tools for generating software code poses a significant risk to the software supply chain security. AI-generated code can inadvertently or intentionally include vulnerabilities or malicious elements that are difficult to detect.

The study, which used 16 of the most widely used large language models to generate 576,000 code samples, found that 440,000 of the package dependencies they contained were “hallucinated,” meaning they were non-existent. Open source models hallucinated the most, with 21 percent of the dependencies linking to non-existent libraries. A dependency is an essential code component that a separate piece of code requires to work properly. Dependencies save developers the hassle of rewriting code and are an essential part of the modern software supply chain.

The speed at which AI can produce code, combined with its potential to introduce subtle flaws, makes it a vector for introducing “phantom malware” or security weaknesses into software projects. Developers might use this code without fully understanding or auditing its contents.

This raises concerns about the integrity of software built using AI assistance, potentially leading to widespread security issues if vulnerabilities are embedded in commonly used libraries or applications. Improved methods for verifying and securing AI-generated code are urgently needed.

The issue is that this is a dangerous echo chamber, real relationships require the give and take of behavior between all parties.  With ChatGPT, even destructive behavior was still lauded.

WEF Digital Identity Infrastructure

https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/04/digital-public-infrastructure-building-connected-future/

The World Economic Forum (WEF) discusses the importance of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as foundational to building a connected and inclusive future. DPI encompasses essential digital systems and platforms, often highlighting components like digital identity, digital payments, and data exchange systems.

According to the WEF perspective presented, well-designed DPI can facilitate access to services, drive economic growth, and enhance efficiency in areas ranging from finance to healthcare and governance. It is viewed as a critical enabler for digital transformation at a national scale.

Successful DPI implementation requires collaboration between governments, the private sector, and civil society. It also touches upon the need for trust, security, and interoperability within these digital systems to realize their full potential while addressing potential risks.

The issue is that once you are connected to everyone else on the planet, their issues are democratized and become your issues.  Everyone will need to be guided because the multitudes always bring “complexity” requiring experts from institutes imposing governance.

Platforms such as India’s Aadhaar – a biometric digital ID system that enables more than 1.4 billion users to access banking, government benefit programmes and other digital goods – and the Open Health Stack – an open-source framework resource to aid in developing interoperable health systems – are examples of the power of robust DPI development.

Imagine a future in which open-source AI models powered by trusted, ethically-sourced data sets are available to empower users to develop the tools they need to see their creativity and entrepreneurship flourish, or where users engage with new cultures and experiences thanks to accessibility improvements bringing online many of the 2.6 billion people not currently connected. A future-focused DPI agenda can help such tools and experiences become realities.

Individuals use digital ID in six roles to interact with institutions and create shared value.

Perkins Coie Stands For the Constitution: Nessel v Trump, Again

https://www.michigannewssource.com/2025/05/nessel-vs-trump-again-michigans-ag-asks-for-legal-muscle-while-preaching-independence/

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reportedly seeking external legal counsel for matters potentially involving former President Trump, amidst accusations of political motivations behind her actions. This move suggests she is bringing significant legal resources to bear on cases connected to Trump.

Critics argue that retaining high-profile, potentially politically aligned law firms like Perkins Coie, contradicts her public statements about acting independently and non-politically. The article questions the cost and necessity of hiring outside counsel when the state’s legal department exists.

The situation highlights ongoing political tensions and legal battles in Michigan involving the Attorney General’s office and figures associated with the former administration. The article focuses on the perceived contradiction between her stated independence and the decision to enlist powerful outside legal help.

Return of the Trump

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/trump-sues-dana-nessel-gretchen-whitmer-over-lawfare-targeting-the-fossil-fuel-industry/

Former President Trump is reportedly suing Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, alleging they are engaging in “lawfare” against the fossil fuel industry. The lawsuit claims the Michigan officials are using legal means to unfairly target and undermine businesses involved in oil, gas, and other traditional energy sources.

Trump’s legal action suggests a defense of the fossil fuel sector against what he perceives as politically motivated attacks from state-level Democrats. The lawsuit frames the actions of Nessel and Whitmer as exceeding their authority or misusing legal processes to advance an environmental agenda harmful to the energy industry.

The case adds another dimension to the ongoing legal and political clashes between Trump and Michigan’s Democratic leadership. It underscores the national political polarization surrounding energy policy and environmental regulations.

Lawsuits over CLimate Damage

The Governor of Covid Tyranny Says Trump Causes Constitutional Crisis

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/dte-submits-574m-rate-hike-request-three-months-after-whitmer-mpsc-approved-217m/

(Note: The article provided discusses a DTE energy rate hike request, not statements by the Governor regarding Trump or a constitutional crisis. The summary below reflects the article’s actual content.)

DTE Energy has submitted a new request for a significant rate increase of $574 million, just three months after the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved a previous $217 million hike. This rapid succession of requests is drawing scrutiny.

The utility company argues the additional funds are necessary for infrastructure investments and operational costs. However, consumer groups and critics are likely to challenge the justification for seeking another substantial increase so soon after a recent approval.

The request highlights ongoing debates about energy costs, utility profits, and regulatory oversight in Michigan. The MPSC will review the proposal, which could lead to higher electricity bills for residents if approved.

Two Dems support Hackey But Do The Rs even Know Who She is?

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/two-democratic-lawmakers-agree-ag-nessel-sicced-government-on-business-owners-during-pandemic

According to the article, two Democratic state lawmakers in Michigan have expressed agreement with the sentiment that Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office used government power excessively against business owners during the COVID-19 pandemic. This suggests a rare point of criticism against the AG from within her own party.

The lawmakers reportedly feel that the enforcement actions against businesses violating pandemic orders were overly aggressive or harmful. Their comments lend some validation to criticisms previously leveled by Republican lawmakers and business advocates regarding the state’s handling of pandemic restrictions and enforcement.

This internal critique from Democrats, even if limited to just two individuals, indicates that there may be some lingering discomfort or disagreement within the party regarding the strictness of pandemic-era enforcement measures taken by the Attorney General’s office.

Electricity Rate Hike, AGAIN for 574 Million

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/dte-submits-574m-rate-hike-request-three-months-after-whitmer-mpsc-approved-217m/

DTE Energy has filed for another substantial increase in electricity rates, requesting an additional $574 million from customers. This new petition comes shortly after the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) granted the utility a $217 million rate hike approval just three months prior.

The utility cites ongoing investments in grid modernization and reliability as reasons for needing the increased revenue. However, consumer advocates are questioning the frequency and magnitude of rate hike requests, raising concerns about affordability for residents and businesses.

The proposal will undergo a regulatory review process by the MPSC, which will include public input. The outcome will determine the extent to which electricity bills for DTE customers will rise.

How is a Forced Park Pass Purchase Not A Tax?

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/lana-theis-only-republican-to-vote-against-senate-dem-plan-to-force-drivers-to-buy-state-parks-pass/

Michigan Senate Democrats have advanced a plan that would automatically enroll drivers in a state parks pass program when they renew their license plate registration. This would effectively make purchasing a parks pass mandatory for vehicle owners unless they opt-out.

Critics, including State Senator Lana Theis who was the only Republican to vote against the measure, argue this automatic enrollment functions as a de facto tax. They contend it forces citizens to pay for a service they may not use and shifts the burden of opting out onto the individual.

Proponents argue it’s an efficient way to fund state parks and recreational facilities, ensuring sustainable maintenance and improvements. The debate centers on whether the opt-out mechanism sufficiently differentiates it from a mandatory fee or tax.

1000 More Acres For Solar

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/05/whitmers-dnr-eyes-another-1000-acres-of-state-forests-to-cut-down-for-solar-power-plant/

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR), under Governor Whitmer’s administration, is reportedly considering allocating another 1,000 acres of state forest land for the development of a solar power plant. This move is part of the state’s broader push towards renewable energy sources.

The proposal involves clearing forested land to make way for solar panel arrays. While supporting clean energy goals, the plan raises concerns among some groups about the environmental impact of deforestation on public lands and potential effects on ecosystems and recreation.

This potential land use decision highlights the tension between conservation efforts and the push for renewable energy infrastructure development. The process would involve evaluation of the specific site and public commentary before a final decision is made.

1000 Acres Is Just A Small Area, Right.  It’s Actually ~=

Here is the formula for determining how much land would be destroyed, how long does it take for a single Walmart lot to be approved?

1000 seems like a small number. And to many who are clear on the dimensions of what encompasses an acre, this may not appear alarming. Fortunately Jason Hayes, of the Mackinac Institute, put things in perspective with this very simple model. Anyone can use it get a better grasp of the sheer size, and the horror, of what is about to happen.

1 Walmart parking lot is roughly 4 acres.

So let’s do a thought experiment. In your mind, drive to Walmart, park your car. Or for Michiganders, drive to Meijer’s. Take away the buildings and now you have a large lot. No shade.

That’s just 1 Walmart parcel.

Now let’s do some gorilla math. Yes, this is knuckle scraper level but this is something everyone SHOULD do because the scale of what’s about to happen is escaping us. We’re not thinking because we can’t visualize the results.

Divide 1000 by 4 and you get 250 Walmart parking lots.

1000/4 = 250

That’s just one parcel the DNR is offering.

You see, part of our problem is the sentiment of the metro areas in Michigan, who have shaped the politics of the state, are ignorant of the scale and scope of what is going to happen in regions that they rarely see. And honestly, when you look at an aerial view on screen or on a printed map, the scale is not apparent.

But when asked “Hey, how do you feel about 250 Walmarts being built next to, replacing Holly Recreation Area or Seven Lakes State Park with solar panel lots” is that enough to wake people up?

But at least it’s only 1000 acres, right?

No There Were Never Jobs In The First Place

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/05/02/report-says-more-than-25k-michigan-jobs-threatened-if-ira-tax-credits-are-canceled/

A report suggests that over 25,000 jobs in Michigan could be jeopardized if tax credits provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are discontinued. These credits are intended to incentivize investments in clean energy and manufacturing.

The report argues that companies relying on these federal tax credits for projects, particularly in the electric vehicle battery and renewable energy sectors, might halt or scale back operations if the credits are removed. This could lead to job losses or prevent the creation of anticipated positions.

The analysis underscores the economic impact of federal clean energy policies on state-level job markets and investment. The potential cancellation of IRA credits is a point of political debate regarding future energy policy and economic development.

50 Million for Copper is Steep Compared to 700 Million for Gotion?

https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/lawmakers-try-again-get-50m-controversial-copperwood-mine

Michigan lawmakers are reportedly attempting once again to secure $50 million in state funding for the controversial Copperwood mine project in the Upper Peninsula. This renewed push comes despite previous failures to gain legislative approval and ongoing opposition from environmental groups and some residents.

The proposed funding is intended to support infrastructure development necessary for the underground copper and silver mine. Proponents argue it will bring jobs and economic activity to the region, while opponents raise concerns about potential environmental damage to nearby wetlands and water bodies.

The article discusses the debate over the state’s role in subsidizing private mining operations and contrasts the $50 million request with other, larger state incentives offered to projects like battery plants, referencing the Gotion project implicitly in the title’s framing. The legislative effort faces hurdles due to past controversies and differing priorities within the state government.

In Michigan, we were told that we had a secure election system. Then we discovered that a CPP Foreign National had voted in the presidential election. Then we learned that 16 foreign nationals had voted. Last week, the count is not 80.

All Foreigners Want to Follow Rules – CCP Voter is MISSING

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/bench-warrant-issued-after-accused-noncitizen-voter-misses-michigan-court-date

A bench warrant has been issued for a noncitizen accused of illegally voting in Michigan who failed to appear for a court date. This incident draws attention to concerns about noncitizens participating in US elections. Authorities are now seeking to locate the individual following their failure to appear before the court. The case underscores the ongoing scrutiny of voter rolls and election integrity issues in the state.

Specifically, the sources state that the decision to issue a bench warrant for Haoxiang Gao, a University of Michigan student accused of illegally voting despite not being a U.S. citizen, was made by Judge J. Cedric Simpson of District 14A Court. This decision occurred after a bench conference with Gao’s lawyer.
Haoxiang Gao, a Chinese national, is facing two felony charges for allegedly casting a ballot while ineligible and lying on the voter registration form. He failed to appear for a scheduled probable-cause hearing, which had been previously delayed. Federal law requires voters in U.S. elections to be citizens, and authorities allege Gao falsely claimed citizenship when registering.

If convicted, Gao could face up to nine years in prison and potential deportation. This case has drawn attention as it highlighted a loophole in Michigan’s same-day registration system, leading lawmakers and state officials to propose measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Republicans in Michigan have used Gao’s case to advocate for stricter voting laws, including requiring proof of citizenship when registering and implementing continual citizenship checks for registered voters. Democrats have indicated they will propose legislation to stop noncitizen voting without requiring broad citizenship checks.

SoS Blunder Barbie – Does Not Comply with Subpoena

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/04/matt-hall-jay-deboyer-rachelle-smit-blast-jocelyn-bensons-refusal-to- comply-with-subpoena/

Republican lawmakers, including Matt Hall, Jay DeBoyer, and Rachelle Smit, are criticizing Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for allegedly refusing to comply with a legislative subpoena. The subpoena is reportedly related to matters under the Secretary of State’s purview, though the specific details are not fully elaborated in this summary. Lawmakers are expressing frustration over what they perceive as a lack of cooperation and transparency from Benson’s office. This situation highlights ongoing political tensions and oversight efforts within Michigan state government. The article suggests a dispute over the extent of legislative authority in demanding information from executive branch offices.

Details:
  • Michigan House representatives have stated that Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is stonewalling the House’s requests for election information.
  • Benson explicitly said she would not comply with subpoenas that were issued by the House Election Integrity Committee.
  • These subpoenas were seeking training materials provided to clerks and election workers by Benson’s office in past elections.  This is public record and segments of those materials have been used in lawsuits against Benson.
  • Benson claimed she would not comply with the subpoenas due to “security concerns”.  But what are those security concerns?  We know who the county clerks are already!!
  • Rep. Jay DeBoyer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, and Rep. Rachelle Smit, who chairs the Election Integrity Committee, are the representatives seeking these materials. They noted their extensive background as county clerks provides them with unique qualifications to scrutinize the documents.
  • DeBoyer believes that something is being hidden. He stated that his interest is in ensuring elections are run according to the law, not in jeopardizing security. He urged Benson to respond to the subpoenas to fulfill her public pledges for transparency.
  • Speaker of the House Matt Hall also expressed frustration with Benson and obtained subpoena powers for his Oversight subcommittees to get information like training manuals to ensure clerks are being instructed correctly.
  • Hall suspects Benson would seek prosecutions through the Attorney General’s office to keep this information silent if they tried to obtain it directly from clerks.
  • The decision to issue the subpoenas was a result of persistent delays from Benson’s office, with Hall stating they had heard “I’ll get that to you tomorrow” for weeks.
  • Hall predicts that Benson’s vow to not comply with the House subpoenas will result in legal action and will wind up in court. He anticipates that Benson will lose in court again, they will obtain the training materials, but it will come at a significant cost to taxpayers and be a distraction.
  • Hall also mentioned past difficulties with Benson’s office, citing an instance during the 2020 election where she allegedly stonewalled a request to testify before a committee until the legislative term ended.

Andrew Perlman, dean of Suffolk University Law School and an advisory council member of the American Bar Association taskforce on the law and artificial intelligence, said he had not heard of AI being used to develop bar exam questions or standards being put in place governing such uses.

iPhone Moment For Robotics

https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/iphone-moment-nears-humanoid-robots

The article posits that humanoid robots are approaching a breakthrough moment analogous to the impact of the iPhone on mobile technology. It suggests that recent advancements in AI, machine learning, and physical engineering are making these robots more capable and potentially viable for widespread use. This could lead to them becoming increasingly integrated into various aspects of daily life and work. The “iPhone moment” implies a point where the technology becomes sufficiently practical, user-friendly, and versatile to see rapid adoption and disrupt existing paradigms. The piece speculates on the potential applications and future trajectory of humanoid robotics.

Brett Adcock, the founder of Figure AI, a company developing humanoid robots, uses the term “iPhone moment” to characterize what he sees happening in the robotics field.

Adcock views humanoid robots as the “ultimate ‘deployment vector’ for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)”. He believes that giving AGI a physical body through humanoids is crucial and allows the AI to learn and act through transfer learning and multitasking.

The “iPhone moment” signifies a point where these robots become affordable and suitable for widespread adoption in both the workplace and potentially the home. Adcock forecasts Figure AI’s robots could be priced around $20,000 to $30,000, possibly leased for about $300/month, which could allow for multiple robots per home doing chores.

While commercial applications in manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare are seen as booming with massive demand, home deployment is considered harder but is accelerating.

Achieving this “iPhone moment” for humanoid robots requires solving difficult problems, including building ultra-reliable hardware, teaching robots using neural networks (rather than hand-coded controls), and enabling them to generalize actions to unfamiliar tasks via language instructions. Figure AI, for example, built its own AI model called Helix to enable generalization

Will AI Really Bring Expertise

Flawed Study Says Smart Phones Are Good For Children

https://www.afterbabel.com/p/flawed-absolution-for-smartphones

“A Flawed Absolution for Smartphones – by David Stein” is a critique of an opinion piece titled “Kids having smartphones is likely fine and may even be beneficial”. The authors of the opinion piece, Professor Justin D. Martin and graduate student Logan Rance from the USF Department of Journalism and Digital Communication, based their claims on findings from the new Life in Media survey. This survey included 1,510 Florida tweens aged 11 to 13.

Martin and Rance’s opinion piece specifically criticized the views of Jonathan Haidt, who recommends delaying smartphones until age 14 and social media until 16. Martin and Rance concluded that there is “nothing wrong with limiting smartphone use among kids”, but parents shouldn’t feel guilty about giving a smartphone to a child as young as 8 or 9, because it is “likely fine, perhaps even beneficial”. They based this on their finding that children who own their own smartphones fared “significantly better, or at least no worse,” than kids who do not own smartphones on “almost every health and wellness measure” they fielded in the survey.
The author of this critique, David Stein, argues that the claims in the opinion piece are “repeatedly undermined by findings in the survey report”. He identifies three fundamental flaws in Martin and Rance’s methodology:

1. Their argument ignores the actual usage of smartphones and similar devices, especially tablets. The survey found that smartphone use among kids aged 11 to 13 is nearly universal (over 90%), and a majority owns a tablet (56%) with a vast majority using a tablet (85%). The critique argues that comparing kids who own a smartphone with those who don’t own one but frequently use a smartphone or tablet (owned by someone else) is not a reliable method to evaluate the harms of smartphone use. Haidt’s concern is about smartphone usage, not mere ownership.

2. Their argument ignores the substantial influence of demographics such as parental income and education. The report reveals that smartphone ownership is less common among kids from higher-income families (30% of kids from higher-income families don’t own one vs. 16% from lower-income families). Simultaneously, kids from higher-income families and those with more educated parents were far more likely to agree that life feels meaningless (e.g., 31% in households making $150,000+ vs. 10% under $50,000). The critique suggests that because the “non-owners” group is disproportionately from higher-income families, these demographic factors could easily explain the poorer wellbeing outcomes observed in that group, potentially flipping the relationship between smartphones and wellbeing if properly adjusted.

3. Their argument ignores reverse causation as a partial explanation of the results. Martin and Rance note that kids without their own smartphones were much more likely to report being cyberbullied. The critique, aligning with the Life in Media report authors’ commentary, argues that the more plausible explanation is that parents of kids who have been bullied, or are vulnerable to it, delay giving them a smartphone to protect them from further exposure. This means that already poor wellbeing (being bullied) could lead to not owning a smartphone, rather than smartphone ownership protecting against bullying. The report authors explicitly label this theory as “reverse causation”. This reverse causation explanation may also apply to other wellbeing outcomes that Martin and Rance interpret as evidence that smartphones are safe.

Stein points out that the survey results actually show “no substantial differences” between smartphone owners and non-owners in the degree to which they report technology impairing their lives, such as difficulty stopping use, losing sleep, or neglecting tasks due to technology. The Life in Media report itself calls these results “alarming”, which Stein finds contradictory to Martin and Rance’s conclusion that smartphones are harmless.
The critique also notes that Martin and Rance suggest public posting on social media is the main culprit for ill-being, not smartphones. However, Stein highlights that Jonathan Haidt also warns against public posting on social media, and the Life in Media survey report includes a recommendation consistent with Haidt’s views on social media age limits

No More Dollar Store

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/chinese-sellers-us-market-begin-hiking-prices

Bloomberg reports that Shein raised the prices of all goods for the U.S. market, with markups much higher in some categories than others.

Data showed the average prices for the top 100 products in the beauty and health category jumped 51% at the end of last week. For home and kitchen products and toys, prices rose by 30%, led by a massive 377% increase for a 10-piece set of kitchen towels. Women’s clothing grew by 8%.

Keep in mind these are the same cheap Chinese goods that have flooded the U.S. market over the past decade, crippling American manufacturers.

Severed Conscience Activated: Will Be Violence OK Next?

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/nyt-hack-goes-mask-defending-judge-protecting-illegal-alien-sometimes-civil-disobedience

New York Times opinion piece from David Brooks that defends a judge who refused to detain an illegal immigrant accused of domestic violence. It argues that the NYT columnist attempts to justify the judge’s actions by framing them as a form of “civil disobedience.” The author takes issue with this characterization, suggesting it normalizes or excuses judicial overreach and potential disregard for the law in favor of personal political beliefs. The piece implies a bias in mainstream media coverage regarding immigration and judicial matters. It suggests a concerning trend where established legal processes are undermined under the guise of activism or conscience.

“Especially on the issue of immigration, there are a lot of people who are appalled by what the administration is doing,” Brooks said on PBS’s NewsHour regarding President Trump’s fulfill his campaign promise of cracking down on illegal immigration. “And there will be times for civil disobedience. And to me, let’s say she did escort this guy out the door. https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/owosso-barber-still-battling-9k-in-fines-from-whitmer-lockdown

Karl Manke, an Owosso barber, is still facing significant fines imposed during the COVID-19 lockdowns under Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Despite court rulings that invalidated the executive orders used to fine him, the state is reportedly still pursuing the collection of approximately $9,000 in penalties. This ongoing legal battle highlights the lingering disputes over government authority and individual rights during the pandemic response. Manke famously reopened his shop in defiance of lockdown orders, becoming a symbol of resistance.

Details:

  • He is a 77-year-old Owosso barber.
  • He is still battling $9,000 in fines from the COVID-19 lockdown period.
  • He was one of six hairdressers the state fined for cutting hair in 2020 after Governor Whitmer declared barbers and hairdressers “nonessential”.
  • Manke defied the lockdown orders and was criminally charged for cutting hair at the Michigan Capitol on May 20, 2020. This was part of a protest called Operation Haircut.
  • During the lockdown, when he reopened his shop, state government entities temporarily suspended his barbershop and occupational license. Manke testified that he was never notified about this loss of license.
  • Despite racking up $9,000 in fines, Manke kept working to pay bills.  He believed that Whitmer’s executive orders violated his rights.
  • The Michigan Supreme Court ultimately agreed with him in October 2020.  When the Michigan Supreme Court ruled in September 2020 that Whitmer’s orders were unconstitutional, the criminal charges against Manke were dropped. However, the state refused to drop the fines.
  • His fines included $1,500 for having hair and neck strips on his barbershop floor and having a comb in his pocket during a televised media interview, which a state representative noted was unusual. He was also fined $6,000 for cutting hair without a license at the Michigan Capitol during Operation Haircut.
Five years later, Manke is awaiting a ruling in the Shiawassee County Circuit Court to drop the fines.  Manke testified about his experience at a House Weaponization of State Government hearing on April 23, where other business owners targeted by the Whitmer administration and Attorney General Dana Nessel also spoke.

More MEDC Failure: RV Failed Despite 1 Million Funding

https://www.themidwesterner.news/2025/04/sturgis-rv-facility-closing-laying-off-121-after-gretchen-whitmer-gave-over-1m-from-taxpayers/

Sturgis RV facility closing, laying off 121 after Gretchen Whitmer gave over $1M from taxpayers

The Elkhart, Ind., company inked a deal with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in July 2021 to invest $35.9 million in its Sturgis facilities and create 450 jobs in exchange for over $1 million in taxpayer subsidies, Crain’s Grand Rapids Business reports.

“The Michigan Economic Development Corp. in July 2021 approved a $700,000 performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant to support the investment,” according to the business publication. “The Michigan Department of Transportation also kicked in a $307,000 Transportation Economic Development Fund grant for the project.”

The 144,000-square-foot Heartland RV facility officially opened in Sturgis in November 2023 with 34 assembly line stations set up to produce up to 5,000 RVs per year. It’s unclear whether the company fulfilled its grant requirements to pocket the taxpayer cash.

Maybe Subsidies Are A Bad Thing – Changing Their Tune

https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/whitmer-subsidy-record-companies-get-1-billion-jobs-fall-short-promises

Michigan has provided over $1 billion in state subsidies to companies under Governor Whitmer’s administration. However, the article highlights that these companies have collectively fallen short of their job creation promises. This raises questions about the effectiveness and return on investment of large state incentive packages. Critics argue that the promised economic benefits, particularly job growth, have not fully materialized despite the significant public expenditure. The report analyzes the gap between the number of jobs pledged by companies receiving subsidies and the actual number created.

God Made Us Not Trim Trees

https://www.bridgemi.com/quality-life/power-company-god-caused-ice-storm-we-shouldnt-have-compensate-customers

A Michigan power company executive testified that tree trimming was not completed in certain areas because “God makes the trees grow.” This testimony occurred during a hearing about power outages following a significant ice storm. The executive’s comments suggested that the utility was not solely responsible for the widespread outages, implicitly blaming natural growth for contributing to downed lines. Critics argue this statement attempts to deflect responsibility from the company’s maintenance practices. The incident highlights the ongoing debate about utility accountability and infrastructure resilience during severe weather events.

Specifically, the sources state that two affected utilities aren’t regulated by the state and don’t plan to offer credits. These utilities are identified as Presque Isle Electric and Gas Co-op and Cloverland Electric Cooperative. A spokesperson for Presque Isle confirmed they have no plans to credit customers, although they will waive late fees. State law requiring compensation of $40 a day for outages lasting four days or more (if at least 10% of customers are without power) does not apply to these unregulated electric cooperatives.

This decision not to offer credits contrasts with Alpena Power Co., which is regulated by the state and is seeking a waiver from the requirement to credit customers, arguing the storm was beyond their control. It also contrasts with Consumers Energy, which plans to pay credits to its customers affected by the storm. The March ice storm caused thousands of residents to lose power for days or even weeks

SoS Benson’s Report:  We Now Have 16 Foreign Nationals Who Voted in 2024

https://www.michigan.gov/sos/resources/news/2025/04/03/michigan-department-of-state-review-confirms-instances-of-noncitizen-voting-are-extremely-rare

  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, 16 credible cases of noncitizens potentially voting were identified following an audit launched in December 2024. Initially, a press release mentioned 15 cases, but it was later clarified that 16 cases, including that of a “Chinese national” who allegedly voted illegally, had been identified. Of these 16 cases, all but two have been referred for possible prosecution, with one individual having since died and another case remaining under further investigation.

  • Secretary Benson stated in September that there was “no evidence that noncitizens are voting”. Despite the new report, she seemed pleased, suggesting that these 16 alleged instances represent a “tiny fraction” of the more than 5.7 million votes cast in the presidential election (0.00028%) and that further efforts to secure elections are unnecessary. She described this as a “serious issue, one we must address with a scalpel, not a sledgehammer

Pennsylvania:  Election Fraud Conviction, Yet Still In Office

https://thefederalist.com/2025/04/07/3-pennsylvania-officials-plead-guilty-to-election-fraud-and-2-are-still-in-office/

Council Vice President MD Nurul Hasan: He pleaded guilty to all 33 charges, which included one count of conspiracy, 16 counts of giving false information in registering to vote, and 16 counts of fraudulent voter registration.

Councilman MD Munsur Ali: He pleaded guilty to 25 charges, including one count of conspiracy, 12 counts of giving false information in registering to vote, and 12 counts of fraudulent voter registration.

Councilman MD Rafikul Islam: He pleaded guilty to seven charges, which comprised one count of conspiracy, three counts of giving false information in registering to vote, and three counts of fraudulent voter registration.

The charges stemmed from a seven-step mail-in voting scheme designed to fraudulently cast ballots for MD Nurul Hasan in his write-in campaign for mayor. This scheme involved obtaining identification information from people living outside Millbourne, fraudulently changing their voter registration addresses to Millbourne, requesting mail-in ballots for them, filling out the ballots for Hasan, forging signatures on the ballot envelopes, and submitting these fraudulent ballots The Department of Justice stated that the three falsely registered nearly three dozen non-Millbourne residents and cast ballots for them.

Despite their guilty pleas to these serious election fraud offenses, both Hasan and Ali were still serving on the Millbourne Council Board as of April 4th. They are scheduled for sentencing on June 18th and face maximum possible sentences of five years in prison for each of the charges to which they pleaded guilty. For example, Hasan faces a potential of 165 years in prison due to his 33 charges.

Good News In North Carolina

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/new-court-decision-disputed-north-carolina-race-means-65000-votes-are-rcna199746

A three-judge panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled Friday that more than 65,000 votes cast in the contested race for the state Supreme Court in 2024 must be recounted and verified — a win for the Republican candidate in the razor-thin, disputed contest and a decision that could potentially tip the election results in his favor.

In the ruling, the Republican majority involved in the decision ordered that a group of more than 65,000 voters, whose eligibility was challenged by Republican Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin and his lawyers, now have 15 business days to provide state elections officials with the necessary proof of identity that would verify their votes. The court ruled that any voters who don’t respond will not have their votes counted in the race between Griffin and Democrat Allison Riggs, which is still caught in legal battling five months after Election Day.

The arduous task of verifying those voter identities will fall on the North Carolina State Board of Elections. And the decision sets up an appeal to North Carolina’s highest court, the state Supreme Court — the body that the winner of this election will join.

“The inclusion of even one unlawful ballot in a vote total dilutes the lawful votes and ‘effectively disenfranchises’ lawful voters,” the Republican majority on the three-person panel wrote in its opinion. “Post-election protests protect against this risk of vote dilution by enabling candidates and voters to rigorously investigate the election process, identify and challenge unlawful ballots, and ensure those ballots are not counted.”

Shadow Cabinet Met In Congress

John James

Republican Congressman James announced campaign for governor at 430 PM.  Three hours later there is already Republican Detractors.

Garrett Soldano ran for governor in 2022 and did not make it through the primary.  His discussion of winners only being qualified to run for governor rings very hollow because that would have disqualified him from running in 2022.  Arguably that was a more important time to have credentials since we were still under the Covid tyranny and fresh from the 2020 election fraud.

James Bio

Military Career

James began his career in the U.S. Army after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in legal studies and systems engineering. He served as an aviation officer and AH-64 Apache pilot during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 to 2012, achieving the rank of captain and earning the Ranger Tab.

Business Career

After leaving military service, James joined James Group International, a global supply chain management company founded by his father. He eventually became president of James Group International and CEO of Renaissance Global Logistics, overseeing logistics services for automotive clients worldwide. His leadership earned him recognition, including Crain’s Detroit Business “40 Under 40” in 2020.

Political Career

James entered politics in 2017, running as the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan twice—against Debbie Stabenow in 2018 and Gary Peters in 2020—though he lost both races. Despite these defeats, he gained national attention for his competitive campaigns.

In 2022, James successfully ran for Michigan’s newly redrawn 10th Congressional District and was re-elected in 2024. In Congress, he serves on several committees, including Transportation and Infrastructure, Foreign Affairs, Education and Workforce, and Energy and Commerce.

Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism

Former Meta Executive Sarah Wynn-Williams on 'Careless People' Memoir - Business Insider

What Wynn-Williams relays is a vastly different ethos. As I have said on Severed Conscience and in other writing, social media is built to track all facets of our emotions. You are feeding your joy, anger, frustration, and elation into your devices. You share photos and videos. It is a profile of your life and it is a machine that is used to predict your sentiments. And sell you things. And as Matt Taibi revealed in the Twitter Files, it was designed to identify your political leanings and silence you.

And Wynn-Williams reveals that the technology was used to target teens.

In April 2017, a confidential document is leaked that reveals Facebook is offering advertisers the opportunity to target thirteen-to-seventeen-year-olds across its platforms, including Instagram, during moments of psychological vulnerability when they feel “worthless,” “insecure,” “stressed,” “defeated,” “anxious,” “stupid,” “useless,” and “like a failure.” Or to target them when they’re worried about their bodies and thinking of losing weight. Basically, when a teen is in a fragile emotional state.

Jonathan Haidt, author of the Anxious Generation, has inspired medical and mental health specialists to conduct surveys on teen psychological health with the view to identify correlations between depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Many disturbing symptoms and behavior has been observed:

  • Teens spend 4.8 Hours per day on social media
  • 51% of U.S. teenagers spend at least four hours daily on social media
  • Older teens, girls exceed the overall average in social media time
  • Personality traits, parental restrictions are key factors in teens’ use

2025 acres for Solar Panels:  Otsego Lawsuit

https://www.michigannewssource.com/2025/04/exclusive-otsego-county-residents-sue-over-controversial-solar-farm-approval/

The lawsuit filed by Otsego County residents against Otsego County and RWE Solar Development, LLC includes a constitutional challenge to Michigan’s new renewable energy law, Public Act 233 of 2023. The plaintiffs argue that this law delegates excessive legislative power to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), an unelected executive agency, without providing clear standards or limitations.

According to the lawsuit, this alleged delegation violates Michigan’s separation-of-powers doctrine and the constitution’s “vesting clauses,” which assign specific powers to the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The attorney representing the plaintiffs, David M. Delaney, stated that the entire framework of Public Act 233 was designed to fast-track solar development at the expense of local control. He highlights that while the law technically preserves local authority by allowing municipalities a year to adopt a Compatible Renewable Energy Ordinance (CREO), it also sets up a structure where the state can override that authority through the MPSC if local governments don’t comply.

The lawsuit claims that RWE cannot seek a permit from the MPSC because none of the conditions outlined in Act 233 for state-level intervention apply, as Otsego County approved RWE’s permit application even after failing to adopt a CREO by the state’s deadline. The plaintiffs are asking the court to declare parts of Act 233 unconstitutional due to vagueness and unlawful delegation of power.

The outcome of this constitutional challenge could have significant implications for how Michigan balances renewable energy development with local governance and constitutional safeguards. This information comes from the article “EXCLUSIVE: Otsego County Residents Sue Over Controversial Solar Farm Approval”. The other source you provided, regarding noncitizen voting, does not discuss any constitutional challenges.

MEDC Funds 300 Million for Non Profit

https://www.michigannewssource.com/2025/04/money-to-barbershop-quartets-pottery-studios-and-more-medcs-economic-development-funding-uncovered/

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) allocated nearly $300 million in 2024 to various non-profits, focusing on artistic and cultural initiatives.

Funding recipients included a pottery studio, a Mexican ballet school, and the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartets.

Critics argue that these grants prioritize cultural projects over direct economic development and job creation.

Concerns have been raised about the alignment of these expenditures with MEDC’s mission to foster economic growth in Michigan.

Instead, the governor lauded her efforts “to attract cutting-edge companies and develop international reputation” in the defense and aerospace industries, highlighting a visit by the “Team Michigan delegation” to the Midlands Aerospace Alliance, a group of 300 aerospace industry members in the UK.

Whitmer said previously the week-long excursion with Michigan Economic Development Corporation CEO Quentin Messer, Michigan Department of Agriculture Director Tim Boring, and Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Scott Bowen also involved “strategic meetings with business leaders, government officials, and industry stakeholders to promote investment opportunities in Michigan.”

On Thursday, State Rep. Steve Carra, R-Three Rivers, introduced House Bill 4310, which he says is designed to enhance ethics, accountability and transparency in the governor’s global excursions.

Carra likened Whitmer’s profligacy to a teenager traveling abroad with mom and dad’s credit card—not the top official elected to lead the state.

“Governor Whitmer has recently racked up quite the cache of frequent flyer miles on the taxpayers’ dime,” Carra said in a news release. “Given that the Democrats squandered a $9 billion budget surplus and Governor Whitmer has proposed tax hikes for this year’s budget, this legislation is an important step in strengthening accountability of state resources.”

Dana Darth Nessel Allegedly Did NOT Report Fraud to FBI

Law Enforcement Whistleblower: Far-Left Michigan Atty General Lied, Never Referred GBI Strategies Investigation to FBI, Federal Authorities, Despite Admitting Voter Fraud was Real in 2020 Election

A law enforcement whistleblower alleges that Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel lied to the public by claiming her office referred an investigation into GBI Strategies, a left-wing group suspected of voter registration fraud in the 2020 election, to the FBI and federal authorities. The whistleblower claims the investigation was closed by Nessel years ago and never referred, suggesting a cover-up of potential voter fraud.

Rep. Rachelle Smit tells the Gateway Pundit that this information reached her and, “We are still investigating this, as part of the Election Integrity Committee of the Michigan State House. If true, if this is indeed what Nessel has done, it will be very troubling and I intend to get to the bottom of it.”

Nessel’s spokesman Danny Wimmer lied to Bridge Magazine when he said it was the FBI’s authority whether or not to investigate, knowing all along that it was never referred in the first place.

Nessel said that this was proof that “the system worked” because fraud was detected and referred to authorities. But in this case, the authorities were the corrupt Biden FBI that never took over the case. Nessel could tell the lie knowing that the FBI would engage in the same word games, claiming that they could not speak about ongoing investigations.

A high-level senior source in Michigan law enforcement has told the Gateway Pundit: the GBI case was not referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Nessel conducted her own investigation and ultimately determined there was fraud, that GBI Strategies had submitted fraudulent ballots, but said that their motives were only financial and not election fraud.

Since, this senior law enforcement source says, the fraud was just for personal enrichment, their goal was only to make more money, they made the conscious decision not to charge them and the case was not referred to the FBI.

“We seized a mountain of evidence. They asked us to keep it, but the only thing they asked us for were small details of things that we referenced in search warrant applications. Our investigation was officially concluded as ‘inactive’ because we’re holding onto the property, but the Attorney General’s office shut everything down.”

Michigan Advance: Pastor Sewell – Election Denier

https://michiganadvance.com/2025/03/27/democrats-say-michigan-house-committee-is-a-circus-after-platforming-election-deniers/

After Detroit-area pastor Lorenzo Sewell, an advocate of President Donald Trump, testified this week in the newly renamed Michigan House Election Integrity Committee, Republican and Democratic members of the committee are at odds on their respective visions of fair elections.

While Republicans regarded the testimony of Sewell and Detroit-area activist Ramon Jackson, who alleged without proof mass fraud in recent presidential elections, as an important look at Michigan’s election systems, Democrats decried the day as nothing more than a “circus”.

Democrats say Michigan House committee is a ‘circus’ after platforming election deniers

  • Sewell is a prominent figure in Detroit with political ties to Donald Trump who is now actively involved in questioning the integrity of Detroit elections
  • His testimony contributes to the ongoing partisan divide regarding election security in Michigan, with Republicans viewing his claims as significant and Democrats dismissing them as baseless
  • Sewell’s rhetoric connects the idea of fair elections to the very foundation of democracy, framing any perceived irregularities as a serious threat
  • His involvement highlights the continued efforts by some Trump supporters to raise doubts about past election results, even in the lead-up to future elections
  • The fact that Trump visited Sewell’s church for a campaign event underscores the political significance of Sewell and his platform within the Detroit community

Hard To Use Transparency Website Cost Millions:  Benson’s $9 Million Blunder

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/jocelyn-benson-spent-9m-new-transparency-portal-critics-say-its-mess

A multimillion-dollar update to Michigan’s transparency portals is still a work in progress after the Michigan Department of State rolled out the new software this month.

Used to provide the public with information about Michigan’s campaign finance, lobbying reports and personal financial disclosures of politicians, the new Michigan Transparency Network portal provides less information to the public in its current form than the old system.

In a statement, the Michigan Department of State said what has been released represents the “base functionality” of the system and characterized it as a work in progress. They said they were aware of issues with the system they hoped to correct “as soon as possible.”

The state contracted in May 2023 with a private vendor, Tyler Technologies, to build a new system, paying the contractor more than $9.3 million over a five-year period as they update thestate’s outdated systems.

One of the contract deliverables calls on Tyler Technologies to “improve public display and search of data,” and the newly updated portals do offer the public a sleek new interface. But, at least for now, the new system also reduced the amount of information accessible to the public relative to the old system, making it tougher for activists and government watchdogs to gather information about their elected officials.

DOGE Health Cuts to Michigan Budget:  394 Million

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-health-watch/doge-lays-out-394m-michigan-health-cuts-what-does-it-mean

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) website indicated it is cutting approximately $394 million in health grants to Michigan.  The Trump administration said on Wednesday it was canceling $12 billion in grants allocated to state health departments during the COVID-19 pandemic and planned to fire 10,000 federal US Health and Human Services employees

  • Concerns include the increased spread of infectious disease and diminished ability to respond, as well as a budget hole that could impact other DHHS-funded programs benefiting vulnerable populations
  •  State Rep. Carrie Rheingans stated that Michigan does not have the financial reserves to make up for these life-threatening federal cuts.
  • In Wayne County, it appears that cuts will affect $3.7 million that pays for COVID vaccine administration and supports lab workers and epidemiologists tracking disease
  • Among the Michigan grants that DOGE says have been canceled are $238.3 million that remained from a CDC grant for COVID-19 testing
  • $58.8 million from a grant for lab capacity to prevent and control emerging infectious diseases
  • $25.5 million from a grant to provide mental health services

Despite receiving billions of dollars in subsidies from Michigan taxpayers over the past 30 years, the state has experienced a significant decline of 287,300 manufacturing jobs in the automotive industry
  • Michigan’s manufacturing workforce decreased from 881,900 jobs in December 1999 to 594,600 jobs as of January 2025, representing a substantial loss over 25 year
  • Questionable Forecasts and Boondoggle Projections: Mozena criticizes the “boondoggle projections of auto factories that garner billions of dollars from taxpayers,” stating that neither the government nor automakers can accurately predict the future. He deems the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) claims of predicting and influencing the auto industry’s economic cycles as “unrealistic at best and fraudulent at worst”.
  • Electric Vehicle Plant Setbacks: An example cited is the $1.7 billion in promises made to an electric vehicle plant in Marshall, which later cut $1 billion in planned spending and 800 planned jobs.
  • Corporate Welfare: James Hohman of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy identifies the auto industry as the primary recipient of corporate welfare in Michigan. He states that $21.5 billion in corporate welfare has been authorized for the industry since 2000

HUGE Social Security Fraud:  5 Million Social Security Numbers Issued To Illegals

Joined by Antonio Gracias, a private equity titan and a key member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team tasked with rooting out waste in the federal government, Musk unveiled a shocking chart: a dramatic spike in Social Security Numbers issued to non-citizens, soaring from 270,000 in 2021 to a mind-blowing 2.1 million in 2024.

That’s almost 5 million non-citizens now embedded in the system—collecting benefits, draining taxpayer dollars, and, most alarmingly, infiltrating the voter rolls.

Gracias continued, “We found 1.3 million of them already on Medicaid as an example. On every benefit program we went through, we found groups from this particular group of people, 5.5 million people in those benefit programs. And then what was really, really disturbing us was why. We’re asking ourselves why. And so we actually just took a sample and looked at voter registration records, and we found people here registered to vote in this population.”

This ambitious project, driven by a desire for efficiency and potentially fueled by unsubstantiated fraud claims, is considered extremely risky by experts and could jeopardize the delivery of benefits to over 65 million Americans

  • Replace all of SSA’s systems currently running on COBOL with a modern alternative like Java
  • The project is being organized by Steve Davis from DOGE
  • The timeframe for this massive migration is a few months, considered extremely tight by experts
  • Past Modernization Efforts:
    • The SSA had previously attempted to modernize its systems in 2017, with a projected timeline of around five years.
    • This previous effort was pivoted away from due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Technical Challenges:
SSA’s infrastructure contained over 60 million lines of COBOL code as recently as 2016, with millions more in other legacy languages.
The agency’s core systems haven’t been “substantially” updated since the 1980s, when they developed their COBOL and Assembler-based database system, MADAM.
Migrating this volume of complex code in months would likely require using generative artificial intelligence for translation.

DOGE Involvement:
At least 10 DOGE operatives were reportedly working within SSA earlier in March 2025, initially focused on online benefit access.
Sources within SSA anticipate the migration project to begin after DOGE’s “Are You Alive Project,” aimed at identifying improper payments, progresses. This project involves DOGE operatives calling individual beneficiaries and is currently facing legal challenges.

XAI Copper Tops:  XAI Acquires Twitter, Data Used to Train AI.  How Comfortable Are You Working for Musk?

This means Grok from XAI will outcompete OpenAI’s Chat GPT because Twitter data will be used to train Grok.  Twitter owns your Tweets, ergo Elon can use the text.  Human interaction is what is required to keep the AI LLMs update so AI can judge sentiment, understand trends, learn new vocabulary, under cultural themes and mores.

Musk stated that the combined entity aims to “build a platform that doesn’t just reflect the world but actively accelerates human progress”
This statement frames the acquisition in a larger context, suggesting that the integration of xAI’s AI capabilities with X’s extensive reach is intended to go beyond simply mirroring current events and instead actively contribute to the advancement of humanity. Musk believes this combination will unlock “immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach”.

While the specific mechanisms for how this “platform that actively accelerates human progress” will function are not detailed in the provided sources, the acquisition itself, valuing X at $33 billion and xAI at $80 billion, underscores the significance of this ambition. The synergy is further highlighted by the fact that xAI’s Grok model is already trained on X posts and available to X users, suggesting a foundational integration of AI into the social media platform

Elon Musk explicitly stated that “xAI and X’s futures are intertwined”. He described the official combination of the companies as a step to “combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent”. This combination is intended to “unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach”.
Therefore, the collaboration on Grok represents a key aspect of the synergy driving the acquisition. The existing use of X data for training Grok and the availability of Grok to X users demonstrate a pre-existing integration that Musk aims to leverage and expand within the newly combined company

Why Does AI Hallucinate?

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/03/why-do-llms-make-stuff-up-new-research-peers-under-the-hood/

A significant challenge with Large Language Models (LLMs) is their tendency to confabulate information or hallucinate answers that are not supported by their training data. This means they sometimes invent plausible-sounding but incorrect information instead of saying “I don’t know”.  The company Anthropic and OpenAI competitor is conducting research to determine if this can be curtailed.

This process creates distinct sets of neurons that activate when Anthropic’s AI Claude encounters a “known entity” (e.g., “Michael Jordan”) or an “unfamiliar name” (e.g., “Michael Batkin”)
Activating the “unfamiliar name” feature tends to activate an internal “can’t answer” circuit, prompting the model to respond with something like “I apologize, but I cannot…”
In the fine-tuned “assistant” version of Claude, the “can’t answer” circuit tends to be in the “on” position by default, making the model hesitant to answer unless other active features suggest it should
This research provides valuable insights into the internal mechanisms that cause LLM hallucinations, moving beyond simply observing the phenomenon.

Take Aways
  • Understanding the interplay between “known entity” recognition and the “don’t answer” circuitry is vital for building more reliable LLMs.
  • Improving the granularity and accuracy of “known entity” features could help LLMs better determine when they have sufficient information to answer confidently .
  • While limited, this work offers a promising direction for future efforts to reduce and mitigate AI confabulation
  • Fine-tuning helps to mitigate hallucination by training the model to act as a helpful assistant and refuse to answer when its training data is limited [5].

No Such Thing As Race In Biology

Trump Administration wants to push Eugenics “adjacent” science.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2025/03/trump-annoyed-the-smithsonian-isnt-promoting-discredited-racial-ideas/

On Thursday, the Trump administration issued an executive order that took aim at one of the US’s foremost cultural and scientific institutions: the Smithsonian. Upset by exhibits that reference the role of racism, sexism, and more in the nation’s complicated past, the order tasks the vice president and a former insurance lawyer (?) with ensuring that the Smithsonian Institution is a “symbol of inspiration and American greatness”—a command that specifically includes the National Zoo.

But in the process of airing the administration’s grievances, the document specifically calls out a Smithsonian display for accurately describing our current scientific understanding of race. That raises the prospect that the vice president will ultimately demand that the Smithsonian display scientifically inaccurate information.

In 2023, the National Academies of Science issued a report intended to get the scientific community to recognize cases where it was using unscientific thinking about race. And the report’s language couldn’t be more clear about rejecting the complaint found in the executive order:

In humans, race is a socially constructed designation, a misleading and harmful surrogate for population genetic differences, and has a long history of being incorrectly identified as the major genetic reason for phenotypic differences between groups.

So, indeed, race is not a biological reality but rather a social construct. The Smithsonian had it exactly right. And now, the administration wants it changed.
