Schreier said Hook showed a strong chance of winning his case, that protecting free speech was a “compelling” public interest, and that he would face “irreparable harm” if the firing stood.

Amazon: The company that venture capitalists claim will be “100% AI by 2030” was approved for a total of 12,391 visas. Specifically, Amazon received approval for 10,044 H-1B visas in 2025 alone. Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud division, was approved for 2,347 H-1B visas, often for developers. The source questions why AWS needs over 2,000 visas to bring workers into the US if AI is supposedly replacing human coders.

An unnamed “Fortune 100 technology firm that develops, owns, and operates technology campuses globally as an end user and owner/operator” –likely one of the large hyperscale cloud providers – is set to be the end-user of the campus if it goes ahead. Evaluation work for the site has reportedly been going on since mid-2024.

The project would include across numerous parcels east of Handy Township along Marr Road, Fleming Road, Warner Road and Owosso Road. The parcels that make up the site are currently zoned as AR – Agricultural Residential, SFR – Single Family Residential, and NSC – Neighborhood Service Commercial and would be rezoned to RT – Research and Technology.

Much of the land in question is owned by local farmer Ryan Van Gilder, who called the project a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome one of the largest and most respected companies in the world to our hometown.”

Planning commission vote follows a seven-hour public meeting and outpouring of resident concern over impacts to water resources and energy prices.

The Howell Township Planning Commission voted unanimously against rezoning land for a massive data center Tuesday night, following a seven-hour meeting with hundreds of reported public comments.

The project, from developers Stantec Consulting Michigan Inc. and Randee LLC, would occupy a 1,077-acre site of largely agricultural land north of I-96, roughly 54 miles from Detroit.

Hacks On AI Assistants Puts Gmail at Risk

So far, prompt injections have proved impossible to prevent. That has left OpenAI and the rest of the LLM market reliant on mitigations that are often introduced on a case-by-case basis and only in response to the discovery of a working exploit.

Accordingly, OpenAI mitigated the prompt-injection technique ShadowLeak fell to—but only after Radware privately alerted the LLM maker to it.

A proof-of-concept attack that Radware published embedded a prompt injection into an email sent to a Gmail account that Deep Research had been given access to. The injection included instructions to scan received emails related to a company’s human resources department for the names and addresses of employees. Deep Research dutifully followed those instructions.

By now, ChatGPT and most other LLMs have mitigated such attacks, not by squashing prompt injections, but rather by blocking the channels the prompt injections use to exfiltrate confidential information. Specifically, these mitigations work by requiring explicit user consent before an AI assistant can click links or use markdown links—which are the normal ways to smuggle information off of a user environment and into the hands of the attacker.

US Govt Owns 10% 

The Trump administration’s big Intel investment comes from already awarded grants

Intel officially announced an agreement with President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday afternoon, following Trump’s statement that the government would be taking a 10% stake in the struggling chipmaker.

While Intel says the government is making an “$8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock,” the administration does not appear to be committing new funds. Instead, it’s simply making good on what Intel described as “grants previously awarded, but not yet paid, to Intel.”

 

Specifically, the $8.9 billion is supposed to come from $5.7 billion awarded but not paid to Intel under the Biden administration’s CHIPS Act, as well as $3.2 billion also awarded by the Biden administration through the Secure Enclave program.

Google Anti Trust Suit:  Open Web Is In Decline

As users become increasingly frustrated with AI search products, Google often claims people actually love AI search and are sending as many clicks to the web as ever. Now that its golden goose is on the line, the open web is suddenly “in rapid decline.” It’s right there on page five of the company’s September 5 filing, as spotted by Search Engine Roundtable.

A recent analysis of AI Overviews web traffic from the Pew Research Center suggests AI Overviews results in a substantial drop in web traffic. Google executives have disputed this, claiming the search clicks are “relatively stable,” according to search head Liz Reid. It feels like Google is trying to have it both ways.

If the increasingly AI-heavy open web isn’t worth advertisers’ attention, is it really right to claim the web is thriving as Google so often does? Francis Bacon’s intellectual prowess was so respected, and his political philosophies so similar to the themes of William Shakespeare that is has been theorized that he is the author of Shakespeare’s work.

In fact Shakespeare’s The Tempest, a tale of sailors blown of course to a far away island to the west bears striking similarities for Bacon’s famous unfinished work The New Atlantis.

…contends that Bacon is responsible for transmuting Christian hope for spiritual salvation into a secular dream of material comfort and argues that the Christianity of Bensalem is actually a “fundamental assault upon, transformation of and ultimate displacement of Christianity.” Denise Albanese asserts that Bensalemite Christianity “first serves as yet another instance of reverse colonialism, with the natives’ conversion already an accomplished fact” and as the “code for an intellectual imperialism.”

Bacon uses this primordial history to portray a golden age that has been virtually lost from memory; as a result, humanity has been left with a truncated account of its past achievements. Bacon refers to an ancient wisdom that has been lost and replaced by impotent, inferior philosophies. Yet the purpose of the Platonic myth in “New Atlantis” is to instill hope that this knowledge can be recovered and the state of civilizational excellence restored.

Bacon was a transformer, without a doubt.  Some say he cleverly used Biblical themes in New Atlantis to plant themes of the enlightenment and removed God from his position of primacy. The the main city of the New Atlantis was Bensalem, which translate to Son of Peace or Son of Submission.  Note that 40 days the period of time the characters remain in Salomon’s Stranger House in Bacon’s New Atlantis.  40 is indeed very Biblical.

  • Sailors can stay 40 days in Stranger House.  40 Days is clearly a Biblical reference, and is generally a journey or a period of transformation.  Many times a tribulation.

There are many indications that Bacon was deeply religious and believed that a covenant with God should be entered, and that transformation would create a nation guided by God.  There is an interesting twist here, one that is grounded in Reformation reform:  the New Atlantis is the result of direct dispensation from God, for all inhabitants, and the failed understanding of past religious interpretation is set aside for a new relationship with God.

Locke and Hume were central to forming the school of thought called Empiricism.  Empiricism is a theory of knowledge which asserts that knowledge can only (primarily) come from sensory experience.  This meant that all knowledge and wisdom came from observation first.  For Locke, the individual was of the utmost importance, as the Creator granted him the ability to use his reason to derive knowledge and wisdom from what he observed.  We are born as a clean slate.  For Hume, there was a very different outcome.  Hume maintained there was no proof for God, that only what you could observe and verify is valid source of knowledge, all is unknowable because it is cannot be proved. 

Critics of The Enlightenment Say Empiricism Disconnected us From God

Empiricism gives rise to Materialism; that is, all the exists in the World is the material, the tangible.  According to Nietzsche, Christians seek the truth with Empiricism, and in the end they fall into Nihilism once they accepts Hume’s ideas.

But They Forget That Natural Law Also Comes from the Enlightenment

Without Natural Law where The Creator gave each of us qualities that were unique and our self evident, inalienable rights, we would not have had Jefferson and the birth of our nation.

We feel that Natural Law and Conscious Control where you engage in the real work, where you start with observations and use your reason is the answer to Severed Conscience.  Severed Conscience is the opposite, you can’t even use your mind to observe.  Artificial Intelligence, essentially a tool that has no ability to reason, shuts down your thinking.

Transhumanism – An Ugly Cousin to Artificial Intelligence

Because everything is merely material, the elite think they can copy your mind digitally.  In other words, digital recordings are the equivalent of your conscience.  But they will also tell you that your soul doesn’t exist, that you are just a random assemblage of matter, and by chance, we have evolved to speak.  There is no real consciousnesses, but they can copy your conscience and therefore you will live forever.

The sources highlight John Harrison’s H4 clock as “One of History’s Greatest Inventions”. This invention is deeply embedded in the larger context of Harrison’s significant achievements in solving the notorious “longitude problem”.

Harrison’s achievements, culminating in the H4, addressed a critical challenge for seafaring in the 1700s:

Isaac Newton did not believe that John Harrison had fully solved the navigation issue with his maritime clock early on. Newton expressed skepticism about the feasibility of making a watch that could keep accurate time at sea due to challenges such as the motion of the ship, temperature variation, humidity, and changes in gravity in different latitudes. Newton stated at a committee meeting in 1714 that such a watch had not yet been made. He thought that methods relying on astronomy, such as observing the eclipses of Jupiter’s satellites or the position of the Moon, were more likely candidates but also had practical limitations at sea. This was before Harrison developed his successful marine chronometer designs.

The World Economic Forum is calling for more direct action to end the pending food crisis.  Amazing how that is timed with Oregon and Idaho water restrictions and Michigan Avian Flu crisis.  Want fries with the grasshopper burger?

We take it for granted that the Founding Fathers were of a single mind and that they somehow possessed a single dispensation from above that gave us 250 years of liberty and prosperity which would be unfathomable to them at the time of our country’s founding. We see our segment of western civilization as the result of a natural progression and evolution. Indeed it was an evoluation in thinking, but it was not guaranteed.

The process of forming the ideals of the Declaration of Independence were, naturally, a long process of disagreement, reasoning, introspection and harsh debate. If we trace back a few years and read the documents that Dickinson, Adams and others wrote during the First and Second Continental Congresses, we can see many threads from contemporaries and events that shaped Thomas Jefferson’s most famous writing.

The other striking fact was that we were essentially at war in 1775 yet the majority of the colonists didn’t realize the full implications. A year had transpired after the battles of Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill. Yet a majority of the colonists hoped to return to the stability of the colonial system they knew. The Continental Congress had formed an army, they issued a currency, and sanctioned the attack by private ships on British vessels. Yet officially the Continental Congress sought reconciliation. The American people resisted the British while it seemed that the American leadership was reluctant to fully accept the circumstances. Delays in communication resulted in misunderstanding and escalation by both the British and Amercians. Would that have been avoided in this day and age?

Founding Fathers Rutledge and Dickinson urged caution, remaining resolute that independence from the Crown would bring even more violence and destruction upon the colonies. Dickinson, who framed the rights of the colonists in terms of English law, was unwilling break with the society which formed the foundation of his concepts of freedom. Clearly Dickinson believed in liberty as granted to him from the monarchical system, stating the he found the source of his freedom not in Natural Law but within English law.

Massachusetts and Virginia were in the minority regarding adopting measures for independence as soon as possible. Massachusets was the focal point of the British aggression, and Adams was the primary force behind pushing for the colonies to take action as there was no other choice. The battles at Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill only illustrated what the British felt about the rights of the colonists.

This timeline shows how quickly the minority convinced Dickinson and others that they had no other recourse but to assert their right to self determination. Making demands of the King were pointless as this stage.

First came the Lee Resolution, it accelerated the process of asserting our right to self determination quite plainly, if not tersely:

Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

While the Lee Resolution stated what the colonies intended, the Declaration Of Independence clearly galvanized Americans as to WHY they needed to establish their own nation. Jefferson, with the help of Franklin’s edit, clearly articulated what everyone could acknowledge as a fact. Facts matter. Truth matters.

It was the ultimate assertion.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed

Below are the events leading to our official creed as nation being adopted.

  • June 7, 1776: Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presents the resolution for independence to the Continental Congress. The Lee Resolution provided the “What We Intend To Do” in response to British escalation of hostilities.

  • June 10, 1776: Consideration of the resolution is postponed until July 1 to allow moderates to build a coalition. New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and South Carolina opposed declaring independence and it was resolved to delay the vote 20 days.

  • June 11, 1776:

    • Congress appoints a committee (the “Committee of Five”) to draft a declaration of independence.

    • The committee consists of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston.

  • June 12-27, 1776: Jefferson drafts the declaration, which is then reviewed by the committee.

  • June 28, 1776: A fair copy of the committee draft is read in Congress.

  • July 1, 1776: Congress votes on the resolution for independence. Nine colonies vote in favor, two against (Pennsylvania and South Carolina), one abstains (New York), and one is deadlocked (Delaware).

  • July 2, 1776:

    • 12 of the 13 colonies vote for the resolution, with New York abstaining.

    • Congress officially declares the resolution to be in effect.

  • July 2-4, 1776: Congress debates and revises the Declaration of Independence.

  • July 4, 1776: Congress approves the final text of the Declaration of Independence.

  • July 19, 1776: Congress orders the Declaration to be engrossed (officially inscribed) for signatures.

On the morning of the 25th July, 1821, about one hundred miles from Niagara and about 20 from land, aboard the canoe Lightfoot, on our passage from Montreal to Mackinac, in company with eight voyagers, we discovered at the distance of five or six hundred yards a large body floating on the surface of the water, very much like a burnt log from 20 to 25 feet length; but on approaching it three or four hundred yards closer, it proved to be an animal motionless and apparently asleep.

We continued to advance towards it until within 30 yards, when the animal raised its head about 10 feet out of the water, looking around him in the most awful and ferocious manner, and darting forward with great velocity, making the water fly in every direction, and throwing columns of it at a vertical height of 7 to 8 feet with his tail.

After having gone in a western direction about one or two miles, he appeared to resume his former state, we then resolved to attack him, and accordingly loaded our guns for this purpose, and moved slowly toward him within gun shot. We here had a good view of the animal, he is at least 37 feet long, 2.5 feet in diameter, (if measured through the thickest part of the body) is covered with black scales which appeared to create consternation only, he disappearing as before – he has a tremendous head and similar to that of a common snake — frequently thrusting from his mouth a large red and venomous looking tongue. After the animal disappeared we continued our course with a lively oar as may well be imagined. His figure when in motion is serpentine.

“A Miniature Sea-Serpent.”

We have been informed, not by an actual eye-witness, but by one on whose word we can rely, that one day last week, as the schooner Enterprise was coming up Big Bay, a snake described as being some 12 feet in length, and having a large head, which was elevated a couple of feet above the water, was discovered by the Captain following in the wake of the vessel, at a fast rate, and finally passed her, in sight of the crew on board, and also of two individuals residing in town, who were in a small boat in tow of the schooner. We have frequently heard of snakes being seen in the Bay, but never before of the size here described. If any think the story “fishy,” they are referred to the eye-witnesses, who watched the “marine monster” until it was out of sight; his snake ships appearance in these waters, and apparent haste, have given rise to various conjectures, – amongst others, that as free navigation is about to be introduced, he was on a tour of inspection to report the feasibility of cutting a canal, in order to unite the waters of the Bay and Lake.

Oniare, the ancient water spirit of the Great Lakes

 

Bessie has been the subject of superstitious sailors, drunk tourists, and newspaper hoaxes over the centuries. But the legend of the serpentine creature living in Lake Erie actually originated in First Nations culture.

First Nations groups in the Lake Erie region, particularly the Iroquois tribe, would speak of Oniare (“own-yar-eh”), a water spirit that lives in the Great Lakes. The name “Oniare” is the Mohawk word for “snake.”

Oniare is a horned dragon-like snake that breathes both poison and fire (talk about bad breath!). Oniare is said to capsize canoes and devour humans, though the creature will sometimes spare travelers who make great enough offerings.

The story, which appeared in The Bismarck Tribune out of North Dakota, featured on its front page the following story. “Famous ‘Sea Serpent’ Again Seen in Lake: Chicago, Sept. 1. Fact or fancy- that famous “sea serpent” has bobbed up in Lake Michigan. ‘We were about four miles off shore,’ said Capt. G.E. Stufflebeam of the S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, Friday night, ‘when Donald Steele, the lookout saw it.’ ‘I ordered two floodlights thrown on the creature, and there he was wriggling and twisting around and going faster than the ship. We kept it in sight for five minutes. The passengers on deck cried out, ‘what is it,’ but I didn’t know nor did H.J. Cook, former steamship line official who was with me. ‘It flipped its tail and the creature – about 60 feet long – started toward Benton Harbor, Mich.’ That’s Captain Stufflebeam’s story and he said he’ll stick to it.”

The smell of Michigan summer is in the air, and apparently it’s now in a bottle, too.  

Pure Michigan, the state’s tourism brand, announced Friday it’s teamed up with a custom perfumery to launch a new fragrance called FRESH, which promises to evoke “beachy vacation days in the Great Lakes State.”

It’s a partnership with Aroma Labs, which is selling a 4 oz spray that’s made in Michigan and available for purchase online or at the company’s stores in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Chicago. 

The collaboration is expected to continue with future fragrances like HARVEST, FIRST SNOW and AWAKENING (think spring tulip blooms). A soy candle is in the works too, according to the company’s website. 

“Our sense of smell has a unique ability to transport us in time and space,” Vice President of Pure Michigan Kelly Wolgamott said in a statement. 

Michigan lawmakers last year approved $40 million in spending on the tourism campaign through September. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive budget proposes $26 million for Pure Michigan in the next fiscal year, while a separate Senate-approved plan proposes $21 million

The Stop Trump’s Abuse of Power Act, revealed first to The Hill, comes after the Trump administration deployed hundreds of Marines and more than 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles earlier this month amid unrest over the president’s immigration agenda. 

“President Trump has shown a disturbing pattern of disregard for the Constitution and due process. This month, he made it harder for local law enforcement to do their jobs in California by unlawfully deploying our military on U.S. soil — further escalating tension and violence,” Stevens said in a statement.

As the criminal cases involving multiple Chinese nationals continue through Michigan courts, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents nabbed another in Flint on Tuesday.

“Marysville agents, with law enforcement partners, arrested seven illegal aliens from Mexico, Guatemala and one Special Interest Alien from China Tuesday,” Chief Patrol Agent John Morris posted to X. “The Chinese SIA had a prior conviction for disorderly conduct. All will be processed for removal.”

Another Special Interest Alien from China was arrested in Tawas City on May 29, while three others were arrested by Detroit Sector agents in Westlake, Ohio on May 25, according to Morris’ posts.

When you read the headlines from media based in Michigan you would think that a revolution in manufacturing is occurring, and that the World Economic Forum’s prediction that Michigan as a central focal point for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is coming to fruition. So far over 2 billion dollars has been funneled from the state legislature via the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to the emerging Electronic Vehicle manufacturing sector.

Along with misconstruing tax funds for prosperity and actual industrial production, there has been a reboot of the 1980’s comedy Gung Ho in the form of a documentary named American Factory that is now on streaming services with a message of hope for the American Midwest. Yes, China is depicted as savior. While the new jobs are indeed welcomed, notice that this trailer highlights that the US workers are clumsy, they need to be retrained, they are a burden. Despite the triumphant music playing throughout that swells your heart with hope, what is not included in the trailer is how manufacturing was outsourced overseas by our own auto industry and that practice has been encouraged by our legislators. Whether due to increased labor costs, union travails or burdensome regulation, the manufacturing know-how and opportunities were brought by the Big Three automakers to mainland China. Indeed, I have a neighbor who as an engineer for Ford spent years in China training his counterparts.

We have not only lost these opportunities to maintain a strong economy, we became accustomed to the predictive programming the Friedman and Krugman chanted that the rise of China was inevitable as our government at state and local levels created environments that gave the Big Three auto makers an excuse to move off shore. This is not the trend of economics alone at work, as Toyota has run successful manufacturing facilities in Tennessee for years. Yet with American Factory, the premise in the trailer is certainly biased against our work force retaining qualified knowledge. Yes, as Governor Whitmer and others from Michigan, including Ford, have stated “we need Chinese expertise.”

Just over a year ago, Gotion Vice President Chuck Thelen promised the company would be “giving people that live here first shot at a job” at a planned battery component plant near Big Rapids.

Fourteen months later, Gotion is facing a lawsuit targeting its headquarters in Fremont, Calif., with allegations of illegal employment involving Chinese citizens, retaliation against legal workers who raised concerns, and racist comments toward workers legally employed by the company linked to the Chinese Communist Party.

In a lawsuit filed June 13, three workers – one U.S. citizen and two with work permits – accused Gotion, its parent company, China-based Gotion High-Tech, and Gotion Supervisor Chen Li of racial discrimination and unlawful termination, according to The Mercury News.

The lawsuit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, claims Gotion maintained a “revolving door” of Chinese citizens coming into the country on B-1 visas to work at the battery plant, where Li allegedly referred to non-Chinese workers as “foreigners.

Other “illegal practices” in Fremont included the lack of proper permits and safety features, including fire-protection, prompting the City of Fremont to shut down the facility with a “do not enter or occupy notice posted on March 20, 2024, the lawsuit alleges.

Gotion “illegally covered up the shutdown notice and continued to have employees work in the office notwithstanding the safety risks,” according to the lawsuit, which included photos of a Gotion brochure taped over the notice at the Fremont facility.

The grant is part of a broader economic development package secretly negotiated by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration and select lawmakers that includes $715 million in taxpayer-funded subsidies for Gotion to build a battery component plant in Mecosta County.

Gotion is a “wholly owned and controlled” subsidiary of Gotion High-Tech, a Chinese-based battery company whose by-laws require employees to “carry out Party activities in accordance with the Constitution of the [Chinese Communist Party].” A 2024 investigation by the House Select Committee on the CCP found the company is reliant on the CCP’s use of forced labor in its supply chain, while an amended Foreign Agents Registration Act filing admits the company is subsidized by the Chinese government.

Dear Michigan state legislators and Mecosta County Commissioners,

As we informed you, last month we sent a letter of demand to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) regarding the taxpayer-subsidized development of Gotion, Inc. near Big Rapids. On June 11th, the MEDC responded to some of these demands. We’ve compiled a summary of our findings here, for your review, consideration, and action.

In our May 21st letter of demand, we expressed concern that Gotion and The Right Place are in breach of contract with their state taxpayer-subsidized SOAR grants and Renaissance Zone, specifically due to:

    • missing compliance & due diligence documentation
    • material adverse effects
    • material misrepresentation, and perhaps most noticeably:
    • abandonment (due to inactivity for over 120 consecutive days)

The MEDC has responded to our letter by providing the following, according to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA):

    1. Gotion’s 2024 Compliance Certificate
    2. Gotion’s Baseline Environmental Assessment 
    3. Documentation on Gotion’s Milestone 1 and 2, and
    4. Documentation showing $50M of taxpayer funding being disbursed to The Right Place for Gotion

This response was missing a great deal of information, but it did provide confirmation of many of the concerns we raised in our original letter of demand. Specifically: it confirmed that The Right Place and Gotion are in default of the terms of their SSRP grant, on a number of fronts.

Key highlights from FOIA documents

    • There are no Compliance Certificates for 2023. These are required by state law (MCL 125.2009). The Right Place and MEDC completed Progress Reporting for 2023 two and three months after its October 10th due date had passed.
    • In 2024, although Compliance Certificates were provided, the Right Place was over two weeks late in submitting one of its Annual Progress Reports to the MEDC.
    • Jobs have not been created; a total of three jobs are reported for 2023 and 2024 combined.
    • In his 2024 progress report on capital investments, the Right Place’s Ken Rizzio admits that “for the last 6 months of FY24, project planning and implementation activities have slowed due to the lawsuit filed by the company”. The terms of the SSRP grant define terms for abandonment as “infrastructure improvements for the Project have ceased for a period of 120 consecutive days”.
    • For Milestones 1 and 2, no proof of Certification is provided, and the fields for the date of certification and the name of the certifier are blank. 
    • The Baseline Environmental Assessment (BEA) is dated July 27th, 2023–yet the Right Place stated in their SSRP and CIP grant considerations which were approved by the MEDC’s MSF board on October 22nd, 2022, that “an environmental assessment of the site has been completed”. This is clear material misrepresentation by the Right Place to the MEDC, and subsequently to legislators.
    • Perhaps most concerningly of all: the Right Place appears to have received its second $25M disbursement two days BEFORE it submitted its required Milestone 2 report to the MEDC. This disbursement was supposed to be contingent upon meeting the requirements outlined in Milestone 2, yet the Right Place received its second sum of $25M on March 26th 2024, while Milestone 2 reporting was submitted to the MEDC on March 28th.

The lack of 2023 Compliance Certificates, and the admission of six months of inactivity are alone grounds for the initiation of default proceedings on Gotion’s SSRP grant.

But these are not the only grounds for default. Many of the concerns we raised in our letter of demand, which were not addressed in any way by the MEDC, remain. This includes:

    • change in project scope from the agreed 528 acres down to 270 acres
    • failure to create jobs, as is required in the terms of the Renaissance Zone contract
    • critical environmental data is missing from SSRP and CIP grant considerations–specifically that Gotion’s 270 acres contain 60+ acres of wetlands and  lie within a floodplain
    • local community support has been materially misrepresented 
    • Gotion’s lawsuit against Green Charter Township constitutes a material adverse effect on the project 

To the County Commission: we urge you to contact your legislators, and to ask them to enforce the terms of Gotion’s SOAR grant contracts by initiating default proceedings.

To legislators: it’s clear that these grants are not being executed in good faith. The Right Place and Gotion’s flagrant violation of the terms of their contract undermine the integrity of our state’s democracy. The MEDC works for Michigan taxpayers, and they answer to you. We ask that you insist the MEDC uphold the contract terms by initiating default proceedings.

This could be a headache for law firms that have filed class-action lawsuits against AI companies. Kadrey is the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit against Meta. To certify a class of plaintiffs, a court must find that the plaintiffs are in largely similar legal and factual situations.

Divergent results like these could cast doubt on whether it makes sense to lump J.K. Rowling, Kadrey, and thousands of other authors together in a single mass lawsuit. And that could work in Meta’s favor, since most authors lack the resources to file individual lawsuits.

The broader lesson of this study is that the details will matter in these copyright cases. Too often, online discussions have treated “do generative models copy their training data or merely learn from it?” as a theoretical or even philosophical question. But it’s a question that can be tested empirically—and the answer might differ across models and across copyrighted works.

Ted Cruz Bill Moratorium on States Ability to Legislate AI

In early June, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) proposed enforcing a 10-year moratorium on AI regulation by making states ineligible for broadband funding if they try to impose any limits on development of artificial intelligence. While the House previously approved a version of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” with an outright 10-year ban on state AI regulation, Cruz took a different approach because of the Senate rule that limits inclusion of “extraneous matter” in budget reconciliation legislation.

Under the Senate’s Byrd rule, a senator can object to a potentially extraneous budget provision. A motion to waive the Byrd rule requires a vote of 60 percent of the Senate.

As originally drafted, Cruz’s backdoor ban on state AI laws would have made it impossible for states to receive money from the $42 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program if they try to regulate AI. He tied the provision into the budget bill by proposing an extra $500 million for the broadband-deployment grant program and expanding its purpose to also subsidize construction and deployment of infrastructure for artificial intelligence systems.

Republicans have a 53–47 edge in the Senate. Cantwell and Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) teamed up for a press conference last week in which they spoke out against the proposed moratorium on state regulation.

Cantwell said that 24 states last year started “regulating AI in some way, and they have adopted these laws that fill a gap while we are waiting for federal action. Now Congress is threatening these laws, which will leave hundreds of millions of Americans vulnerable to AI harm by abolishing those state law protections.”

The Cantwell/Blackburn press conference also included Washington Attorney General Nick Brown, a Democrat; and Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, a Republican. Brown said that “Washington has a law that prohibits deep fakes being used against political candidates by mimicking their appearance and their speech,” another “that prohibits sharing fabricated sexual images without consent and provides for penalties for those who possess and distribute such images,” and a third “that prohibits the knowing distribution of forged digital likenesses that can be used to harm or defraud people.”

“All of those laws, in my reading, would be invalid if this was to pass through Congress, and each of those laws are prohibiting and protecting people here in our state,” Brown said.

But Wang disagreed with Hunt that she exceeded her authority in enforcing the order, emphasizing in a footnote that her order cannot be construed as enabling mass surveillance.

“Proposed Intervenor does not explain how a court’s document retention order that directs the preservation, segregation, and retention of certain privately held data by a private company for the limited purposes of litigation is, or could be, a ‘nationwide mass surveillance program,'” Wang wrote. “It is not. The judiciary is not a law enforcement agency.”

However, McSherry warned that “it’s only a matter of time before law enforcement and private litigants start going to OpenAI to try to get chat histories/records about users for all sorts of purposes, just as they do already for search histories, social media posts, etc.” Wang’s order could become a gateway to that future, she said.

Wang rejected Hunt’s motion primarily because “whether the temporary preservation of certain chat output log data that was routinely being deleted by OpenAI throughout the course of this litigation may infringe on purported constitutional and contractual privacy rights of individual consumers that use ChatGPT” was deemed a “collateral issue” that does not directly pertain to the central question of copyright infringement.

A significant challenge or “missing piece” for this boom is energy, specifically “how do you power all that”. Digital Currency And Control

Effort by governments around the world to digitize commerce and currency is an attempt to control people through money. This could involve setting rules, such as restrictions on movement or mandates, and then using technology to turn off money or credit cards if those rules are not followed. The system involves not only government surveillance but also corporations tracking individuals with AI and software bots to learn from, influence, and extract value from them. Response to Colonial Unrest:

The Boston Tea Party had demonstrated the colonies’ willingness to defy British authority, prompting Parliament to punish Massachusetts and reassert control. The Intolerable Acts included measures such as closing the port of Boston, restricting town meetings, and allowing British officials accused of crimes to be tried in England.

Replacement of Governor Hutchinson:

Thomas Hutchinson, the previous governor, was granted leave to return to England. General Gage, who was already commander-in-chief of British forces in North America, was chosen as his temporary replacement, with the expectation that his military background would help enforce the new laws and restore order.

Military and Civil Authority Combined:

Gage’s dual role as both military commander and governor was intended to strengthen British authority in Massachusetts. He was tasked specifically with implementing the Boston Port Act and other Coercive Acts, effectively placing the colony under military rule.

Arrival in Boston:

Gage arrived in Boston on May 13, 1774, to assume his new post. He was familiar to many colonists from his earlier service in America and was initially seen by some as a moderate, but his efforts to enforce British policy only deepened colonial resistance.

Why?

To suppress the possibility of rebellion by seizing colonial weapons and military supplies: British authorities, particularly General Thomas Gage, aimed to prevent open conflict by confiscating arms and gunpowder that the colonists had stockpiled in Concord. This action was intended to neutralize the military capability of the colonial militias and deter further resistance.

To enforce British authority and respond to growing colonial defiance: After the Boston Tea Party and the subsequent Intolerable Acts, Massachusetts had become a center of resistance. The colonial assembly formed a provisional government and called for local militias to prepare for hostilities. In February 1775, the British government officially declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion, prompting orders to restore order by force if necessary.

To arrest key Patriot leaders: General Gage also received instructions to arrest prominent colonial leaders such as Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were believed to be near Lexington. The hope was that capturing these figures would weaken the organizational capacity of the rebellion4.
To prevent violence by acting preemptively: Gage hoped that a surprise operation would allow the British to seize the supplies without bloodshed, thereby averting a larger conflict. However, colonial intelligence networks quickly discovered the British plans, and local riders like Paul Revere and William Dawes warned the militias, leading to the rapid mobilization of colonial forces.

Lexington:

  • Facing an impending rebellion, British General Thomas Gage planned to seize weapons and gunpowder stored in Concord, Massachusetts.
  • Around 5:00 am, approximately 800 British regulars arrived in Lexington and encountered a militia company of over 70 men led by Captain John Parker on the town green.
  • Captain Parker ordered his men to disperse.
  • A shot rang out, although it remains unclear which side fired first.
  • The British soldiers then fired a volley, resulting in seven militiamen being killed and one mortally wounded. Only one British soldier was wounded in this initial skirmish.

Concord:

  • The British moved on to Concord, but the element of surprise was lost. Most Patriot stores had been hidden or removed.
  • Upon arrival in Concord around 8:00 am, British commanders ordered troops to secure the north bridge across the Concord River.
  • Meanwhile, a large militia force of about 400 men from Concord and surrounding towns gathered on a hill overlooking the North Bridge. This force included several companies of minutemen – local men ready to fight at a minute’s notice.
  • Seeing smoke rising from Concord (where the British were burning some supplies), and with rumors of a massacre in Lexington, the militia grew agitated.
  • Under pressure, militia colonel James Barrett ordered an advance to the North Bridge, with orders not to fire first.
  • Alarmed by the approaching militia, the British fired a ragged volley.
  • The militia returned fire, resulting in a handful of men killed and wounded on each side. Captain Isaac Davis and Abner Hosmer of the Acton militia were killed. On the British side, three soldiers were killed and nine others wounded. This volley is considered “the shot heard round the world”.
  • The outnumbered British redcoats retreated back to the town.

The British Retreat:

  • Around noon, the British commander, Colonel Smith, recognized the danger and ordered a retreat back to Boston.
  • Thousands of Patriot militia lined the road and launched a series of ambushes on the British.
  • The British responded by entering homes and attacking those inside.
  • The retreat became disorganized.
  • Around 2 pm, the British force reached Lexington and was met by reinforcements from Boston, Lord Percy’s brigade.
  • They faced nearly 4,000 Patriot militia. Percy’s artillery fire dispersed the militia, allowing the retreat to continue.
  • Despite a more disciplined retreat under Lord Percy, militia sniping continued to take a toll.
  • The British eventually reached the safety of Charlestown around nightfall.
    Fatalities and Casualties:
  • By the end of the day, the British had lost 73 men killed and 173 wounded.
  • The Americans suffered 49 killed and 39 wounded. One source estimates the total American casualties (killed and wounded) at 393 and British at 93, while another mentions 49 Patriots killed. Lord Percy acknowledged the effectiveness of the American forces, noting they were not just an irregular mob.

Whoever dares to look upon them as an irregular mob, will find himself much mistaken. They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about.

Colonial Response:  John Dickinson and The Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms

The Battles of Concord and Lexington in 1775 signaled the intent of the British to treat the colonists like a conquered people, not as British subjects with rights. Dickinson teamed up with Thomas Jefferson to write the The Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms, where the right for the colonists to defend themselves was laid out in terms that presaged the Declaration of Independence.

Parliament adopted an insidious manoeuvre calculated to divide us, to establish a perpetual auction of taxations where colony should bid against colony, all of them uninformed what ransom would redeem their lives; and thus to extort from us, at the point of the bayonet, the unknown sums that should be sufficient to gratify, if possible to gratify, ministerial rapacity, with the miserable indulgence left to us of raising, in our own mode, the prescribed tribute.

The petition does reflect the different stages in both Jefferson and Dickinson’s thinking, and it is here that the appeal is made to King George that the colonies were defending themselves as British citizens who had no designs of breaking free from King George’s rule.

Lest this declaration should disquiet the minds of our friends and fellow-subjects in any part of the empire, we assure them that we mean not to dissolve that Union which has so long and so happily subsisted between us, and which we sincerely wish to see restored.-Necessity has not yet driven us into that desperate measure, or induced us to excite any other nation to war against them.-We have not raised armies with ambitious designs of separating from Great Britain, and establishing independent states.

Dickinson is known for his caution, and at this stage other delegates such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Jefferson saw the writing on the wall with respect to any type of reconciliation. Adhering to principle over popularity, Dickinson remained against declaring independence, feeling that the colonies were unprepared. Clearly they would need support from foreign nations, as they had very little military might to go up against the British Empire, a world superpower at that time. His instinct to seek balance and avoid violence was not attuned with the times. He abstained from the vote to proceed. Had he not, he may have been the one to write the Declaration of Independence instead of Jefferson, as he was still a leading voice in this crisis.
